Q: do you shut down your computer at night?
I am reading conflicting instructions on that issue.

I shut down all my computers, (windows & Mac), when I am finished using them.

I haven't given it any thought. But the one that I have with 7 just goes into sleep mode after a bit. So I just walk away from it and let it do whatever it wants. Same with my laptop with vista, I just shut the lid and walk away.

I just now realized that one of the reasons that I do this is so that I will still have network access to them.

Yep, I shut it down every night, and sometimes during the day if I plan to be away for any length of time.

I'm shutting down every night, or when I don't expect to use it for a while.

We had this discussion before the Crash. It wasn't specifically limited to Windows 7. If your computer is on a network the administrator may want the computers left on so that updates can be downloaded from the network. Otherwise, the rule-of-thumb I use is that if your computer is going to be unused for eight hours or m ore it should be shut down. If the computer is going toonce be unused for less than eight hours it can be left on. In any case, it's good to power cycle a computer at least once every 24 hours to clear the memory.
