View Full Version : For the old "current events" forum... what about the new nbc show?

I'm sure that this would have belonged on that forum, cuz it seems to be bringing about strong feelings... what about the nbc show, "the book of Daniel"?
I've seen the previews and am not impressed... won't be watching, most likely. (though the "feel free to quote me" line from Jesus is great!)
BUT I was "talked to" this morning by a well-meaning believer putting out info. (from the AFA - ? - haven't reseached yet.) and basically asked to call and complain to my local affiliate... also something that makes me "not impressed." I don't understand why someone who rarely speaks to me would shove info. into my hands with the expectation that I would "do the right thing"... obviously, in that person's mind, to call and complain or whatever.
So, what do you all think? Is at church on Sunday the time to communicate about "cultural" boycotting (or whatever it is that I'm being asked to do)? What if it were a political issue? Would your opinions change?
What is the "way of love" in this situation?
Kim :)

The Daniel show has been briefly discussed elsewhere within the last week, but I don't remember the name of the thread.
Speaking of people bringing things up at church that require us to consider what love requires of us, I had a dear lady tell me at church this morning that my house, which has been on the market for several months, would sell if I buried a St. Joseph statue in the back yard and then dug it up after the sale and displayed it prominently at my new house. The website, if I remember correctly, is stjosephtradition.com or something like that. The reason she advised this course of action is because one of her employees sold his house as soon as he ordered his statue online. It costs $7.50, including shipping and handling, if you're interested.
Sometimes I have no idea what love requires in a given situation. I smiled and nodded my head as far as I was able, although the nod might have turned into a shake once or twice. I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have felt valued if I had tried to set her straight, and I'm not at all sure she would have "seen the light" and benefited in any way from the response I supressed. On the other hand.... Gracious....

Kim,
I have very strong feelings about the AFA. First of all, I want to say that some of their positions are accurate...some. There are a couple of people at church who routinely pass out AFA boycott information. I calmly refuse to take their information. Instead of telling them what I really think about the AFA and their leader, I just tell them that I don't think boycotts are the best way to inform others about our feelings and I choose not to participate. I think they must think I am a pagan or something. Oh well.
I haven't been real thrilled with the ads being shown about The Book of Daniel, and I'm sure we won't be watching the show.

As I mentioned before, I predict it won't last long. Because the "devout" Christians will find it too offensive and the non-Christian probably have very little interest in a show featured around a priest

My opinion is that the more attention Christians give to this type of TV show to try to have it canceled, the more people will watch it. And if more people watch it, the network is likely to keep it running. If we just ignore it, not watch it, and not give it the free advertising that we Christians often do when we're trying to get a TV show or a movie canceled, chances are it will bury itself with its own stupidity.

Thanks, y'all. I share your hesitancy, Cindi, about the AFA... but that's another story. And I share the general tone of this thread so far, that "boycotting" isn't usually an effective way to accomplish much (Unless you're the NYC transit union!)
But, what does one do/say/not do/not say to love the person who's determined that you should act on the information they have to give you?
And why, o why, does the AFA tell people "distribute this at your church"???? :gen03

Hmmm....that's a good question because I think I have probably offended some by refusing their boycott items.
Well, first off, you could just take their information, thank them for their time and stash it away in "file 13." My problem occurs when they want you to sign some sort of petition on the spot!
Another way is to say something like, "I just have a personal rule not to participate in boycotts, sorry I couldn't help."
Or, "Thank you, I will share this with my husband (if you are married), and we will discuss what we'd like to do." Even if you know exactly what he'd do, it is often a stalling tactic that gets people off your back.
If it is an AFA document, I have said, "I have a problem with some of the actions of the AFA, so I don't participate in any of their programs." That's the one I think I offended someone with, but I think it is honest and clear.
The problem is, what do you do if they come back later and ask you what you decided to do? Honestly, I haven't had anyone do that, so it hasn't been a problem for me, but I can see the potential for one.

Oh! I want to add something about the "distributing at church" comment. First of all, I understand why they say that...they believe the distributor will find more like-minded people in that one place. I have seen visitors and new Christians handed information like this! I think that if we do hand out things like this, we need to be very careful to whom the information is given. CH

In his song 'The Champion', he portrayed Satan in a very unfair light and that just wasn't very nice.
I'm also boycotting the movie, 'End of Days' because it portrays Satan as an Italian (Al Pacino) and that was very demeaning to most Italians.
We should all be boycotting the number '6' since it is only two digits from being the mark of the Beast. If the number of the day on Sesame Street is '6' I make my daughter turn the TV off and pray to God for forgiveness. She might cry a little, but she'll thank me when she doesn't end up in Hell.

... even a local talk show [one that's usually on the radio, from mom, that I hear when I turn on to switch to my station while I eat (later than her)] had pretty much this same thing to say as you've said, Dana. Since it was on the same topic as this thread I'd already seen a few times the last couple of days, I decided to leave it on that station & listen for awhile instead of switching it to my usual station this morning.
You're probably right ... just let it bury itself ... rather than pique everyone's interest so that those who might not even bother to watch it will watch it to see what the hubbub is about ... and so they can then converse tomorrow when this thread is revived for "afterthoughts" on the silly program ... like me! Can't believe I decided I'll give it a little bit of time to see what on earth the ruckus is all about ... don't know that it will get two hours of my time, tho' ... can't believe they're giving it two hours tonight, rather than just start off with a "normal" hour show.
Whatever, there's always the radio if the program is horrid, since there's not much else on, either ................. I'd say, "or maybe even just peace & quiet" if having nothing on wouldn't mean I'd have to then listen to whatever ma has on, instead [can't hear well ... won't get her ears checked ... things are loud!]. Often something being on is a self-defense measure ... drowning out other "loud stuff."
