1/2/05 Between the Years

Our Lord and our God. We joy in Thee. Without Thy Help we could not face unafraid the year before us.

I stand between the years. The Light of my Presence is flung across the year to come...the radiance of the Sun of Righteousness Backward, over the past year, is My Shadow, thrown, hiding trouble and sorrow and disappointment.

Dwell not on the past...only on the present. Only use the past as the trees use My Sunlight to absorb it, to make from it in after days the warming fire-rays. So store only the blessings from Me, the Light of the World. Encourage yourselves by the thought of these.

Bury every fear of the future, of poverty for those dear to you, of suffering, of loss. Bury all thought of unkindness and bitterness; all your dislikes, your resentments, your sense of failure, your disappointment in others and in yourselves, your gloom, your despondency, and let us leave them all, buried, and go forward to a new and risen life.

Remember that you must not see as the world sees. I hold the year in My hands...in trust for you. But I shall guide you one day at a time.

Leave the rest with Me. You must not anticipate the gift by fears or thoughts of the days ahead.

And for each day I shall supply the wisdom and the strength.

1/3/05 Planted Next to Water

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, for he shall be like a tree planted by the waters…and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8

I went on vacation one year and forgot to leave instructions for a friend to water my favorite tree—a miniature lilac planted on the west side of the house. When we got back, the little tree sort of resembled the Sahara desert—during a blight.

Jeremiah reminds us that we are blessed (or happy) when we put our hope and trust in the Lord. For then we will be like trees that are planted next to the water—sending our roots deep into the riverbed of God’s Word, drawing the thirst-quenching, life-sustaining truth from the flow of His Spirit. Then and only then can we bear fruit for others to be nourished.

1/4/06 Feasting On God's Word

“Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.” Jeremiah 15:16

When my children were young, they would head straight for the kitchen after walking in the door from school. The work and stress of the day seemed to melt away with one glance at a plate of cookies waiting on the counter.

Jeremiah wrote about similar appetites. He also headed to the “kitchen” to eat—or consume or devour—God’s Word. We, too, will know childlike joy in feasting daily, not only on Scripture, but also on the knowledge that Someone knows and loves us so much, He leaves a plate of goodies.

1/5/06 Strength Out of Weakness

“Out of weakness [they] were made strong.” Hebrews 11:34

Many ancient believers are members of the Bible’s “Hall of Faith”. But consider the character traits of these nominees for the Bible’s “Hall of Weakness”. Eve was a blame-shifter. Cain let anger and bitterness turn to hatred and murder. Noah had a weakness for wine. Abraham told lies to protect himself. Sarah was jealous of a younger woman. Rebekah played favorites with her children. Jacob was sly. Rachel was envious of her sister’s successes. Moses was afraid to speak in public. Aaron succumbed to peer pressure. Samson was a womanizer. David tried to hide the evidence of his sins. Peter tended to speak before thinking. Thomas placed facts before faith.

Yet if you look at the end of the “Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11, you will find a little phrase in the midst the volleys of praise. The writer states that these faithful men and women “out of weakness were made strong”. So you see, they weren’t so very different from us after all!

1/6/06 Healthy Bodies

“Fear the Lord and depart from evil. It will be health to your flesh, and strength to your bones.” Proverbs 3:8

“Most people suffer poor health”, the old saying goes, “not because of what they eat, but from what is eating them.”

Years before science linked healthy bodies and minds, Solomon wrote that humility, reverence, and righteous living would result in physical health. The grocery store newsstands abound with magazines to promote a healthy lifestyle, but how many of those consider a person’s spiritual well-being?

Feeling stressed? Cast your cares upon the One who cares for you (see 1 Peter 5:7).

Exhausted? Run to the One whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light (see Matthew 11:30).

Worried? Place your concerns in Jesus’ hands and trust Him to meet your needs (see Matthew 6:25-26).

1/7/06 Because of His Gift

“I want to know Christ and the power that raised him from the dead. I want to share in His suffering and become like him in His death.” Philippians 3:10

Trace the path of this Savior, the God who swapped heavenly royalty for earthly poverty. His bed became at best, a borrowed pallet—usually the hard earth. He was dependent on handouts for His income. He was sometimes so hungry He would eat raw grain or pick fruit off a tree. He knew what it meant to have no home. He was ridiculed. His neighbors tried to lynch him. Some called him a lunatic. His family tried to confine him to their house. His friends weren’t always faithful to him.

He was accused of a crime He never committed. Witnesses were hired to lie. The jury was rigged. A judge swayed by politics handed down the death penalty.

They killed him.

And why? Because of the gift that only He could give.

1/8/06 God Hears Our Prayers

“The Lord hears good people when they cry out to him, and He saves them from all their troubles.” Psalm 34:17

When [a friend] told Jesus of the illness [of Lazarus] He said, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” He doesn’t base his appeal on the imperfect love of the one in need, but on the perfect love of the Savior. He doesn’t say, “The one who loves you is sick.” He says, “The one you love is sick.” The power of the prayer, in other words, does not depend on the one who makes the prayer, but on the one who hears the prayer.

We can and must repeat the phrase in manifold ways. “The one you love is tired, sad, hungry, lonely, fearful, depressed.” The words of the prayer vary, but the response never changes. The Savior hears the prayer. He silences heaven, so He won’t miss a word. He hears the prayer.

1/9/06 The Basin of God's Grace

“The blood of Jesus, God’s Son, cleanses us from every sin.” 1 John 1:7

John tells us, “We are being cleansed from every sin by the blood of Jesus.” In other words, we are always being cleansed. The cleansing is not a promise for the future but a reality in the present. Let a speck of dust fall on the soul of a saint, and it is washed away. Let a spot of filth land on the heart of God’s child, and the filth is wiped away…..

Our Savior kneels down and gazes upon the darkest acts of our lives. But rather than recoil in horror, He reaches out in kindness and says, “I can clean that if you want.” And from the basin of His grace, He scoops a palm of mercy and washes away our sin.

But that’s not all He does. Because He lives in us, you and I can do the same. Because He has forgiven us, we can forgive others.

1/11/06 Doing What's Right

“Everyone who is a child of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world—our faith.” 1 John 5:4

You get impatient with your own life, trying to master a habit or control a sin—and in your frustration begin to wonder where the power of God is. Be patient. God is using today’s difficulties to strengthen you for tomorrow. He is equipping you. The God who makes things grow will help you bear fruit.

Dwell on the fact that God lives within you. Think about the power that gives you life. The realization that God is dwelling within you may change the places you want to go and things you want to do today.

Do what is right this week, whatever it is, whatever comes down the path, whatever problems and dilemmas you face—just do what’s right. Maybe no one else is doing what’s right, but you do what’s right. You be honest. You take a stand. You be true. After all, regardless of what you do, God does what is right: He saves you with His grace.

1/12/06 Dark Night....God's Light

“Pray for all people, asking God for what they need and being thankful to him.” 1 Timothy 2:1

You wonder if it is a blessing or a curse to have a mind that never rests. But you would rather be a cynic than a hypocrite, so you continue to pray with one eye open and wonder:

about starving children

about the power of prayer

about Christians in cancer wards….

Tough questions. Throw-in-the-towel questions. Questions the disciples must have asked in the storm.

All they could see were black skies as they bounced in the battered boat…

[Then] a figure came to them walking on the water. It wasn’t what they expected…They almost missed seeing the answer to their prayers.

And unless we look and listen closely, we risk making the same mistake. God’s lights in our dark nights are as numerous as the stars, if only we’ll look for them.

1/13/06 A Burst of Love

“Seek God’s kingdom, and all the other things you need will be given to you.” Luke 12:31

Sometimes God is so touched by what He sees that He gives us what we need and not simply that for which we ask.

It’s a good thing. For who would have ever thought to ask God for what He gives? Which of us would have dared to say: “God, would you please hang yourself on a tool of torture as a substitution for every mistake I have ever committed?” And then have the audacity to add: “And after you forgive me, could you prepare me a place in your house to live forever?”

And if that wasn’t enough: “And would you please live within me and protect me and guide me and bless me with more than I could ever deserve?”

Honestly, would we have the chutzpah to ask for that?...

Jesus already know the cost of grace. He already know the price of forgiveness. But He offers it anyway. Love burst His heart.

1/14/06 Trust God and Don't Be Afraid

“Fear not; stand still (firm, confident, undismayed) and see the salvation of the Lord which He will work for you today.” Exodus 14:13

All of us face times when we feel fear about doing a particular thing. Perhaps the Lord has prompted you to step out and do something, and the devil is trying to keep you from doing it. This verse provides a clear and simple solution: Fear not, don’t run, and God will help you.

When you are faced with fear, rather than bowing your knee to it you must stand firm, knowing that God will help you.

Even if your knees are shaking, your mouth is dry, and you feel as though you are getting weak, just keep saying, “Lord, strengthen me. This is what You have told me to do, and with Your help I am going to do it because it is Your revealed will for me. I am determined that my life is not going to be ruled by fear but by Your Word.

1/15/06 God Enables Us

“It is through Him that we have received grace (God’s unmerited favor) and [our] apostleship to promote obedience to the faith and make disciples for His name’s sake among all the nations, and this includes you, called of Jesus Christ and invited [as you are] to belong to Him.” Romans 1:5-6

God gives us beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness (see Isaiah 61:3). God gives us whatever we need to be victorious. Because He enables us, we credit Him for all the good things in our lives.

Get up today and do the best you can, and then let God do the rest. Don’t try to make mistakes, don’t try to fail; but when you do, repent and get things straight with God. If you need to apologize to somebody, go and apologize. Receive your forgiveness, and go on.

1/16/06 Let the Master Builder Complete the Job

“For [of course] every house is built and furnished by someone, but the Builder of all things and the Furnisher [of the entire equipment of all things] is God.” Hebrews 3:4

God is the Master Builder—the one who builds and equips you for the work of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible tells you it is God who starts a good work in you, and it is God who will finish it!

This means you should let Him do His work in you. There are certain things only God can do, and your part is to let Him do it. You are to handle your responsibility but cast you care on Him.

Confess your sins and failures to the Lord, confident that He will forgive you. Then trust Him with the job of perfecting you for the work He wants you to do in this life. This will take the pressure off of you and relieve you of the anxiety of trying to perfect yourself.

1/17/06 A Useful Vessel

“So whoever cleanses himself [from what is ignoble and unclean, who separates himself from contact with contaminating and corrupting influences] will [then himself] be a vessel set apart and useful for honorable and noble purposes, consecrated and profitable to the Master, fit and ready for any good work.” 2 Timothy 2:21

The Bible refers to us as earthen vessels (see 2 Corinthians 4:7); we are made of clay (see Isaiah 64:8). God formed Adam out of the dirt (see Genesis 2:7), and King David said, “Remember Lord, that I am but dust” (see Psalm 103:14).

When we fill ourselves with God’s Word, we become containers of His blessing, ready to be poured out for His use. God can even use cracked pots! We are all valuable to the Lord. We can offer His truth to people everywhere we go.

Read God’s Word before you go about your routine today, and see how many people you can bless with the truth of His love.

1/18/06 Think Good Thoughts on Purpose

“And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude].” Ephesians 4:23

We know that when God has renewed our mind with a fresh attitude we can choose to make right decisions. For instance, we know that love is not necessarily a feeling but a choice. We must also choose to think good thoughts about other people. Take a moment and think good thoughts about someone you know, and see how much better you feel.

Thinking good thoughts opens the door for God to manifest His good plan in your life. So if you haven’t been working with the Holy Spirit to break old thought patterns and form new ones, it’s time to get started. Think good thoughts about people on purpose, and as your attitude starts to change toward others, your relationships will also start to change for the better.

1/19/06 Recognize Your Calling

“That is why I would remind you to stir up (rekindle the embers of, fan the flame of, and keep burning) the [gracious] gift of God [the inner fire] that is in you.” 2 Timothy 1:6

Before I knew I was called to preach, I would privately reproach entire sermons I had just heard, thinking, ‘I would have said this,, and, I would have done that.’ Then I would think, ‘Women don’t preach!’ but my spirit was stirred by the preacher’s anointing because I had the same anointing.

If you are called to do something, you will get stirred up in the presence of someone operating in that same anointing. For example, if you have an anointing to lead worship, or to do special music, you will probably get more excited about the music than the sermon being preached. When in doubt, ask God to make clear your calling.

1/20/06 Encourage Yourself in the Lord

“David was greatly distressed, for the men spoke of stoning him because the souls of them all were bitterly grieved, each man for his sons and daughters. But David encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord His God.” 1 Samuel 30:6

When David found himself in a seemingly hopeless situation with no one to support him, He encouraged and strengthened himself in the Lord. Later on, that situation was totally turned around (see Samuel 30:1-20).

If you don’t believe in yourself, who is going to? God believes in you, and it is a good thing too; otherwise, you might never make any progress. You cannot always wait for someone else to come along and encourage you to be all you can be. Confidence is something you decide to have. You learn about God—about His love, His ways, and His word—then ultimately you must decide whether you believe it or not. You will not go forward until you decide to believe in God and yourself.

1/21/06 Praise God

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and a thank offering and into His courts with praise! Be thankful and say so to him, bless and affectionately praise His name!” Psalm 100:4

There are many opportunities to praise God throughout the day. If thankfulness for your many blessings suddenly rises in your heart, stop right then and tell the Lord how grateful you are for all He has given you.

Say “I worship You, Lord, for You are worthy to be praised. I need You, and I just want to tell You that I love You. Thank You, Father, for everything.”

Then go on with what you are doing as if it is for Him. You will be amazed at how much fun everyday life becomes in the presence of the Lord.

1/22/05 Faith in the Storms

“He knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.” Job 23:10

Faith grows during storms. These are just four little words, but what significance they have to someone who has endured life-threatening storms!

Faith is that God-given ability that, when exercised, brings the unseen into plain view. It deals with the supernatural and makes impossible things possible. And yes, it grows during storms...that is, it grows through disturbances in the spiritual atmosphere.

Storms are caused by conflicts between the physical elements, and the storms of the spiritual world are conflicts with supernatural, hostile elements. And it is in this atmosphere of conflict that faith finds its most fertile soul and grows most rapidly to maturity.

The strongest trees are found not in the thick shelter of the forest but out in the open, where winds from every direction bear down upon t hem. The fierce winds bend and twist them until they become giant in stature. These are the trees that tool-makers seek for the handles of their tools, because of the wood’s great strength.

It is the same in the spiritual world. Remember, when you see a person of great spiritual stature, the road you must travel to walk with him is not one where the sun always shines and wildflowers always bloom.

Instead, the way is a steep, rocky and narrow path, where the winds of hell will try to knock you off your feet, and where sharp rocks will cut you, prickly thorns will scratch your face, and poisonous snakes will slither and hiss all around you.

The path of faith is one of sorrow and joy, suffering and healing comfort, tears and smiles, trials and victories, conflicts and triumphs and also hardships, dangers, beatings, persecutions, misunderstanding, trouble, and distress. Yet “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who love us” (Romans 8:37).

Yes, “in all these”...even during storms, when the winds are the most intense...”we are more than conquerors.” You may be tempted to run from the ordeal of a fierce storm of testing, but head straight for it!

God is there to meet you in the center of each trial. And He will whisper to you His secrets, which will bring you out with a radiant face and such an invincible faith that all the demons of hell will never be able to shake it.

1/23/06 I Am Beside You

In Thy Presence is fullness of Joy; at Thy right Hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

Do not seek to realize this fullness of Joy as the result of effort.

This cannot be, any more than Joy in a human friend's presence would come as a result of trying to force yourself to like to have that friend with you.

Call often My Name, "Jesus".

The calling of My Name does not really summon Me. I am beside you.

But it removes the scales from your eyes and YOU see ME.

It is, as it were, the pressure of a loved one's hand, that brings an answering pressure, and a thrill of Joy follows, a real, and a joyful sense of nearness.

1/24/06 God's Great Gift

“God is magnificent; he can never be praised enough” Psalm 145:3 (The Message)

We believe that this human life is a great gift, that every part of it is designed by God and therefore means something, that every part of it is blessed by God and therefore to be enjoyed, that every part is accompanied by God and therefore workable.

We can’t get away from God. He’s there whether we like it or not, whether we know it or not. We can refuse to participate in God; we can act as if God weren’t our designer, provider, and covenant presence. But when we refuse, we’re less; our essential humanity is less. Our lives are diminished and impoverished.

“Live…a life Jesus will be proud of; bountiful in fruits from the soul…” Philippians 1:10-11 (The Message)

Christian spirituality means living in the mature wholeness of the gospel. It means taking all the elements of your life—children, spouse, job, weather, possessions, relationships—and experiencing them as an act of faith. God wants all the material of our lives….

The assumption of spirituality is that always God is doing something before I know it. So the risk is not to get God to do something I think needs to be done, but to become aware of what God is doing so I can respond to it and participate and take delight in it.

1/26/06 The Reason for Prayer

“Let my cry come right into your presence, God.” Psalm 119:170 (The Message)

The Psalms were not prayed by people trying to understand themselves. They are not the record of people searching for the meaning of life. They were prayed by people who understood that God had everything to do with them God, not their feelings, was the center. God, not their souls, was the issue. God, not the meaning of life, was critical.

Feelings, souls, and meanings were not excluded—they are very much in evidence—but they are not the reason for the prayers. Human experiences might provoke the prayers, but they do not condition them as prayers.

1/27/06 God's Word, Not Ours

“He spoke, and it came to be; he commanded and it stood forth.” Psalm 33:9 (RSV)

The word of God constitutes the total reality in which we find ourselves. Everything we see and feel and deal with—sea and sky, codfish and warblers, sycamores and carrots—originates by means of this word. Everything, absolutely everything, was spoken into being. The word is as foundational in the work of salvation as it is in the work of creation. Just as everything outside us originates in the word of God, so does everything inside us.

Everywhere we look, everywhere we probe, everywhere we listen we come upon word—and it is God’s word, not ours.

1/28/06 The Way of Faith

“Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in.” Hebrews 12:2 (The Message)

When mountain climbers are in dangerous terrain…they rope themselves together. Sometimes one of them slips and falls—backslides. But not everyone falls at once, and so those who are still on their feet are able to keep the backslider from falling away completely. And of course, in any group of climbers there is a veteran climber in the lead, indentified for us in the letter to the Hebrews as “Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in.”

Traveling in the way of faith and climbing the ascent to Christ may be difficult, but it is not worrisome. The weather may be adverse, but it is never fatal. We may slip and stumble and fall, but the rope will hold us.

1/29/06 Faith and Freedom

“Grace…invites us into life—a life that goes on and on and on, world without end.” Romans 5:21 (The Message)

We are not free from failure. We find that the good intentions of our parents have not always worked out for the good…We find that our teachers were not always honest and that our minds therefore have distorted and inadequate ideas…We find that we want to be good, to be whole, and that we are not…We realize we are not free for what we want most of all—to be complete.

We are free to do many things. We are free from many restrictions. But what about the center? What about God? There we live by faith and failure, by faith and forgiveness, by faith and mercy, by faith and freedom.

1/31/06 Approach Each New Day…

with desire to find Me. Before you get out of bed, I have already been working to prepare the path that will get you through this day. There are hidden treasures strategically placed along the way. Some of the treasures are trials, designed to shake you free from earth-shackles. Others are blessings that reveal My Presence; sunshine, flowers, birds, friendships, answered prayers. I have not abandoned this sin-wracked world; I am still richly present in it.

Search for deep treasure as you go through this day. You will find Me all along the way.

“This is what I have asked of God for you: that you will be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love, and that you will have the rich experience of knowing Christ with real certainty and clear understanding. For God’s secret plan, now at last made know, is Christ himself. In him lie hidden all the might, untapped treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:2-3
