Since moving back to Maryland we've seen a lot of black squirrels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_squirrel). I don't remember seeing any when we lived here in the early 90's. I've tried to get pictures of them, but most have been too shy for me to get close enough to get a good shot. This little guy was a little shy, but not so much that I couldn't snap a few pics of him with my cell phone camera. Even there were two other black squirrels near by I think the gray ones still out number the black ones.

I lived in Maryland from 1990-2002 and I saw black squirrels occassionally all throughout... we used to think (as kids) that they were "good luck."

THey seem to be making a come back. used to be you only saw them on the west side of Michigan. Now they are all over.

We spent quite a bit of time watching one at the National Cathedral several years ago... fascinating creatures... (and the ones at the Cathedral were pretty bold in their approach to humans!)

We don't see them here in Jackson, MI. but you only have to go west to Marshall to find all kinds of them. It's been that way for ages.

Apparently the black squirrels in this area are the same species as the gray squirrels but for some reason they are just darker, and there are more of them now than in the past. From what I've seen, the black and gray here seem get along okay here. The Washington Post blames a Canadian invasion (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/18/AR2005051802251.html).
