View Full Version : My husband got burned

this morning. He was making breakfast for us, something he likes to do..he chose to make oatmeal. He put 2 cups of water in a pan to boil and reached above the stove to get some salt. He either dropped the salt or his hand hit the handle of the pan and the boiling water ended up on his chest and stomach area. I was in the opposite end of the house and I heard him scream..I asked him what was wrong and he told me he got burned. I ran to the kitchen to check on him..yep, burned, on the right side of his chest clear down his abdomen. The pain is intense. I called my son who is a nurse's assistant. He advised me what to do. Mike got in the shower and let ice cold well water run down the burned area. Please pray for Mike..he has ZERO pain tolerance.

it's now several hours later, our doctor called in a pain reliever, and we got some spray on stuff to keep it moist. The worse area is around the breast, and there are a couple of small blisters. Wearing a shirt is even painful.
Keep praying. Mike says he does not remember anything except the pain.

OH DONNA!
this depth of burn, is a first and second degree
and there is no pain to compare..

and one reason why i do not work burn units,
as the pain..is just so difficult if not impossible to alleviate

I can see wet cold tee shirt (not a towel as the fibers can get caught in the burn) placed
on the area (if he can tolerate this)
and try turning a fan on him to offer a bit of reprieve
from the pain, for just a few minutes
then take fan and wet off and apply a soft CLEAN dry tee shirt to occlude the air
from hitting the burned area, exposed nerve endings
will not be as painful when covered.

Just thought of something
did the doctor order a white cream ointment
Sulfamylon???? if not, he can order this,
Just spread this medication THIN (think thin) over the burn

This offers antimicrobial protection and occlude the air
from the burn..breezes cause second degree burns, the
exposed burned nerve endings to scream w/ pain

DO NOT USE VASELINE or butter, as it increases the depth of the burn
Do not use ice as this also will increase the depth of the burn..a second degree burn can extend into a third degree

and use liberally the doctor ordered pain pills, and might just try a cold beer.:basic02
and of course Mike needs total command of the remote control

as Mike is a tee-totaler..the beer might just do the job!

Donna, I jest about the beer, but really do empathize
with your husband

Thanks for the medical advice Judy, the Tylenol #4 is working nicely. Mike is just sitting around with no shirt on. I just hope I don't put my arm around him while sleeping tonight.
NO beer here Judy..you made me LOL!!!

Forget the medication and drink the beer.
Tylenol damages the liver and beer the kidney's. You can get a kidney transplant but not the liver.:):)

Mike is NO pain at all today. He took a normal shower, and drove the car with his seat belt over top of the burned area..NO pain. God is good.
when I went to bed last night, I just cried, I could still here him screaming when that boiling water hit him. I prayed my way through it and went to sleep eventually.
I am amazed how God protected him, this could have been so much worse.

You can replace the liver. My BIL had a transplant 20 years ago. The first one was infected and rejected, so a second liver was transplanted a few days later. He is still alive and doing well.

Mark you say "my Bill", now just what species is Bill, your cat your dog or your relative.
Now my "Hattie" is thirteen now, she is a dog, I think?? won't ask her as she really thinks she has replaced ALL humans in this house, but am happy to learn they are now doing livers.:)
I haven't worked since in the eighties and I need to be brought up here on my medical knowledge. THANKS.

Marg, not Mark, but "Bill" has one "L" too many. If you look closely, it was "BIL" ... that's shorthand for brother-in-law. ;)

We have had to deal with burns with Kara as she doesn't have pain sensation below her waist. Seven years ago we left her with some people in our church. They put her in the bathtub turned on the water, and as they were leaving, someone inadvertantly flushed the toilet. The water now scalding hot, left Kara with first and second degree burns on both knees, and the skin literally fell off. After being in the emergency room until 4:00a.m. in the morning, they gave Kara silver nitrate cream to put on her knees with gauze pads. We praise God for that cream, but it really helped in healing her knees.

Just this week, another burn ended up on Kara's leg(we have no idea how it got there), and we got the silver nitrate cream for her. Its already helping. Is there any way you can get the cream for your husband?

he has some cream that he can use.But because of a "hairy" chest it's nasty to put the cream on. About 28 years ago, Mike was working in a small steel mill. He was pushed down to avoid being crushed by an over head beam that was being moved..he landed hands down on a red hot peice of steel...he was worried about his leg being crushed until he heard a sizzling noise like bacon frying, he then realized it was his hands sizzling. Today, Mike has very soft skin on his plams and no idication of any burns at all.
He is still pain free and not having to use any pain meds. That is just amazin to me because this man has zero tolerance for pain.
