One of the best and most useful books I have ever read. Wright (Anglican Bishop of Durham) takes a swing at representing the basics of Christian faith in about 240 pages. It's easy to read, without big words and technical terms and says things about as well as they can be said.
I don't think there is a person alive who wouldn't benefit from reading it.

I haven't read this book, but NT Wright is by far my favorite biblical scholar-theologian. Not a week of sermon preparation goes by where I don't get input from Wright's writings.

Ryan I agree with you 100% it is a fantastic book. BTW he's also one of my favorite biblical scholars/theologians as well.

Wright will be in Boston this year at the SBL meetings and for an IVCF gathering. I am considering using my annual Pastor's Conference line item to attend those (they are back to back in the same week).
My other consideration is the Wesley Conference in February at NNU.
I have ordered this book upon your recommendation.

I did not know that, Ken. Do you have links for these events?
Please let me know if you come this way. I'd love to get together.

You might run a serious risk of meeting me there, Ken. I leave it up to you to decide if that's a good or a bad thing :fav03 :fav09

I would love to meet you Hans. if not at NNU then at GA. It would probably do us both good to sit and have a person-to-person conversation. I am not the jerk I have made myself out to be on the Current Events forum.

I'm a big fan of Tommy boy, too, and I agree that Simply Christian is a great book.
The thing that impresses me about Bishop Wright perhaps the most is his ability to write across the spectrum; in other words, he can write ridiculously impressive academic works, but he also has stuff for amateur lay theologians; he writes for atheists and agnostics, but he also writes simple Bible commentaries, too.
I would love to meet him, actually. My preacher man sent me a link of Bishop Wright on the Conan O'Brian show - it was funny.

I recently finished reading this book. I must admit I almost quit because, after reading other Wright books, I found it a bit slow and redundant. It picked up steam as it moved along however.
I appreciate Wright's emphasis and application of the interlock and intersection of heaven and earth. He does a good job of introducing the concept in this book.
Chapter 10 (Living in the Spirit) was absolutely SUPERB! It should be read and re-read by every Christian.
I love Wright's writings. This one is, by design, a bit simplsitic. It serves its purpose well. I'm glad I finished it.

My favorite quote from the book:
Despite what you might think from some excitement in the previous generation about new spiritual experiences, God doesn’t give people the Holy Spirit in order to let them enjoy the spiritual equivalent of a day at Disney Land. Of course, if you’re downcast and gloomy, the fresh wind of the God’s Spirit can and often does give a new perspective on everything and, above all, grants a sense of God’s presence, love, comfort, and even joy. But the point of the Spirit is to enable those who follow Jesus to take into all the world the news that he is Lord, and that he has won the victory over the forces of evil, that a new world has opened up, and that we are to make it happen. -- N. T. Wright, “Simply Christian” (P. 122)

I had the privilege of listening to Bishop Wright give a talk based on this book. I first saw it on my father-in-law's shelf and browsed through it and was really interested in the book. After hearing Bishop Wright, I am really interested in reading this book. Appreciate the reviews on here as well. It is on my reading list now.

...it is interesting that Anthony Flew , long regarded as the world's most prominent atheist ( who has now changed his mind and accepts the idea of there being a God ).....quotes Wright and states that Wright sets forth the most convincing case for Christianity that he has found.
