This book was recommended to me by district leadership. I am looking for some resources to assist my congregation in creating atmosphere where community and flourish.
The complete name of the book is Growing an Engaged Church: How to Stop "Doing Church" and Start Being the Church Again
I must admit I was a bit put off when I discovered this book was the result of a Gallup Poll. But I read it anyhow.
I like his overall point which is if you want an engaged church, you must ask the right questions and offer the right solutions and engagement for engagement's sake will not happen. He uses a set of 12 questions reinforce his proposal. He works from the premise that "Belonging leads to Believing."
as a pastor I am sensitive and curious about why people will attend a church for years but never really engage. He tries to answer that and does a pretty good job. My real concern was that "engagement" ended up being passionate activity within the walls of the church (my interpretation). I think the same principles questions could be asked about a more complete understanding of church ministry ... that which transpires in other places ... where people really are.
