Question: will you be carrying your/a Bible to church tomorrow?

We have the verses on powerpoint in church and the verses are in our ss books. But, I like to look up the study notes as a part of the ss discussion and like to look around at the study notes for the sermon's verses.

Question: will you be carrying your/a Bible to church tomorrow?

I didn't participate in the poll. Because the next-to-last option doesn't quite fit my situations. There is no need to carry a Bible to my church. The pew's book racks contain both a hymnals and Bibles. The liturgist identifies the scriptures by book/chapter/verse and, for the untrained, page number.

..... and, no, I don't write in the margins. :basic03

I almost always do. So no answer truly fits me if I want to be completely honest.

How about

"Never... but I teach/preach" ??

:)

I leave my preaching Bible at church. I have a couple of other Bibles at home for devotional and study reading. :)

I would not feel that I had really prepared my heart and self for worship in spirit and truth if I did not have the Word of Truth at my side.

I always carry my Bible to church, even for things like missionary meeting or Sunday evening fellowship. That's because my Bible cover doubles as a type of briefcase for getting checks and bills and such back and forth. However, I also use the Bible part quite frequently while at church.

I take my Bible for Sunday School, but it's a real temptation during the worship service. It's quite a conundrum for me. I'd rather not bring it to the service, but we generally walk, so I can't just run it out to the car in between.

Sorry Nelson, I didn't like any of your choices so I didn't vote. I teach children's church. My students have NIrV and ICB versions and I have several copies of each in the children's church room plus other versions, so usually use one of those. In the sanctuary there are pew Bibles and for Sunday a.m. the scripture is printed on the powerpoint and notes insert.

I do sometimes. I grew up in a church with the readings on the back of the bulletin and they were also read aloud. Now we have pew bibles and they're on the overhead so again, no real necessity, but I do sometimes b/c my kids get "points" in SS to have theirs so I like to bring mine, too. But really, it's a cultural thing I'm not used to so I don't typically bring it.

I couldn't vote either because when my husband and I are in the service we take my Bible faithfully but when I am teaching Children's church it is often left at home as it was today. I type out what I want to say - including the scripture. I do make sure I reference where the scripture is coming from during the lesson.

So my answer would have to be the opposite of option 2 <grin>

An interesting question is:

"Is there a good reason to bring your personal Bible to the worship service?"

As a pastor, I would hope that folks would bring their Bibles into the worship service.

At our church, one of our hopes is that the Sunday message - which is by definition a contemporary application based upon Scripture - will encourage conversation in classes and small groups throughout the week. It is our hope that folks are making notes of information and application based upon Scripture.

We have Bibles in the pew, for folks who don't have them available. And most of the time the passages are contained within the PowerPoint for emphasis. However, I do not see these to be as valuable as folks having their own Bible.

Personally, I think having over 30 years of notes from other preachers' sermons in my personal Bibles has been a wonderful blessing. After all, having sermon notes from Russ Metcalfe, Bill McCumber, Timothy Smith and others for years gave me not only a treasury of devotional material but also hundreds of outlines for my own future messages.

I carry my Bible nearly everywhere I go as I have the NIV installed on my smartphone. :basic05

I have to say that there are times I would prefer to have a hard copy, though. The electronic version can make it a little challenging when I want to locate something and don't know exactly where it is found or I want to scan back over the scripture that was read to find a particular part. This is especially true when I am in the adult SS class. However, that is rare since I am usually with the kids, so it's not a big deal and it's a convenient way to always have my Bible with me.

what?!? Go to church without my pink Bible?! How would I underline the verses that struck me during the sermon with my pink pen? *Gasp*

I rarely ever take a Bible to church. I got out of the habit during my 10 years of working in Children's Church...it was just another thing to cart back and forth...and it was unused since we had plenty of Bibles in the Children's Church area. Now, the verses are usually on the large screen.

You gotta watch that, Betty. The parents of a young man from our church moved to a town 25 miles away. He's driving back for some services but also looking for a church family closer to his new home. He tried a new church on a Wednesday evening. The youth group was in the middle of something so he went to the adult Bible study. Not having his printed Bible with him, he pulled out his iPod and used the Bible on it. Afterward, some dear old saint reprimanded him for "playing" with his "cell phone" during the Bible study.

Now there's a way to welcome young adults into your church.

Hey, Katelynn, you would be pleased to know that my phone containing my electronic Bible is housed in a bright pink (fuschia) case and I can highlight in pink. :basic05

Hehe! It's funny, Marsha, when Mark or I have been asked to read scripture for a service and we get up and start reading from our phones! We've certainly been teased about it. But, I agree with you. You just can't assume what someone is doing on their phone or other electronic device these days! I hope he set that "dear old saint" straight!

Of course, if it had been Mark, he just might have been playing games! :laughing

Like yesterday when I was waiting for the service to start! I was upstairs, so no one would have known - until now.

I do have about 6 versions on my Treo within 2 software programs.

When I used to take my Bible to Church I would frequently misplace it. Now I just pick up a Bible at the door and return it when the service is over.

Now that sounds like my kind of phone. I have a pink cell phone, but it doesn't do anything special. It doesn't take pictures or move or have downloadable programs or a touch screen. I just want to make phone calls on it. I don't really even know how to text! Ha ha...

It's on my phone, so it goes everywhere I go . . . since it happens to be attached to a more important daily necessity . . . hmmm. :(

Oh, my! Someone in the younger generation doesn't know how to text? I'm amazed! :laughing

I know how, but I rarely do because of the extra fees involved. When Mark was in St. Paul, MN a few months ago, he had a really lousy signal so we started texting. Took a while when I got the bill to figure out where the extra charges came from and, of course, we were getting double billed for sending and receiving the same message!
