Opening Ceremony is on the eighth of August (a Friday night), although I think the US is going to get a tape delayed version due to the time change. Some preliminary rounds of a few events are earlier than day.

If you are interested in gymnastics watch Shawn Johnson, the 16 year old girl from Des Moines, Iowa. Her aunt and uncle are members of our church in Marshalltown.

With this truly international event, we might get some good conversations on sports in the regular forum, even.
We might even see a swimming race with Dutch, Australian, and US swimmers all with an equal chance at Gold - that sort of even competition doesn't happen too often.

It's an easy date, Bob. Just like my parent's anniversary: 9/9.

There is a lot of excitement about the women's swimming team here but the men's seems to be understaffed compared to previous Olympics. Still the swimming will be our most consistent opportunity for Gold.

Yes - "8" is a lucky number, in the Chinese culture. I believe it signifies wealth.
I've heard that the opening ceremonies are to start at 8:00 pm (China time) on 08-08-08. :)

In the mens swimming events is Michael Phelps from Maryland. About two weeks after The Olympics end The Para Olympics begin. Again in the swimming is a young girl that we know. My wife Barb went though youth group with her mom.
The young girl's name is Jessica Long. She has Prosthesis for legs. Four years ago in the Para Olympics she won numerous Gold medals. Jessica was adopted from an orphanage in Russia when she was about two. I think she is now about 14. The Para Olympics follow the Olympics in China and use the same facilities.
May God Bless and protect all the athletes in both the World Olympics and the Para Olympics.
