In 35 years of ministry I've seen a lot of things happen in church, but I saw something this morning that I've never seen before.
A man came to me before the service and asked permission to do this and I agreed.
In the middle of the service, following the offering I invited him and the lady he has been dating to come to the front of the church. She had no idea of what was going on -- but he grabbed her hand and she followed.
He then made a very nice speech, got down on one knee and proposed to her! She was speechless, and as he put the ring on her finger she said "Yes." The church broke out in applause and gave the couple a standing ovation.
Well, there's one less thing I can say I've never seen!

I've always though public proposals are sweet in one way but I've sometimes wondered if it puts pressure on the "askee" to say yes.
I mean, the guy is on his knees before you in front of a whole bunch of people. How on earth could you say "no"? :)

It happened at an Astros game earlier this year. Between innings they scan around the crowd and put people's photos on the big screen. Some guys make prior arraignments with the stadium to have the camera on them when they drop to a knee and pop the question. I've seen it happen several times.
Earlier this year the guy had it all worked out and right in front of 40,000 fans she screamed "no," threw her box of popcorn in his face, and walked off! The TV announcers said they had never seen it and that she, indeed walked out of the stadium - it was the real deal!
Happily, nothing like that happened today!

IF the proposer is really sure of the relationship, he will know there is a yes coming..otherwise why would he propose in public?

Yes, that's what I've always thought. That the asker is probably really, really sure of the answer.
I think it is a lovely idea.
I had a long distance proposal. When I moved to Montreal and Carl realized just how much he missed me.
And proposed in a romantic letter (which I still have)
We were married two years later.

I was watching one of those time wasting "video" shows the other day and this guy proposes to his girlfriend on center court of a pro basketball game halftime. Well, this girl places her hand over her mouth, looks around VERY uncomfortably (as if to say, "What should I do?"), and then ran off the court. The cameraman then focused on the bewildered askER. I felt sorry for both of them, and even sorrier now that it is on satellite TV!
Scott, I'm glad your situation turned out better! :)

Can I tell you all a personal story?
We had dated for some time at Bible College, and my roomate always pumped me after I came in from a date, "Did ya pop the queston yet?" over and over he did this..guess he thought I was slow.
Anyways, we really hadnt talked about marriage, but one evening I was determined to do it.
So, sitting in a car, in a park in Cincinnati, Ohio, I asked her to marry me.
Her answer: "Are you serious?"
(But then it was "yes") LOL
I might add, its been 31 years as of this Aug 19!!!

I've seen a couple of similar clips on YouTube - both at basketball games, one was at a Houston Rockets game.

Would also bet that the guy's pastor was rather sure that the answer would be 'yes!' to allow him to do this in the first place, right, Scott? ;)

Can't share what happened to me in church yesterday (confident that everything posted on the internet will get back), but rest assured that pastors have far less control of what happens in a worship service than they would like - or that their congregations give them credit for.

During my college days at Nampa College Church, Dr. Stowe announced at the end of his Sunday morning sermon that he had one more ministry to render, would those folks come forward? It was not a college couple but four people went forward and Dr. Stowe performed a short wedding vow ceremony right then and there for two and their attendants.

The pastor of a church I attended in high school performed a wedding ceremony in the middle of a morning worship service as well. It was an older couple whose spouses had both passed away and they wanted to marry each other. The ceremony was very short and sweet - so much so that my pastor forgot the rings all together and the couple had to remind him at the end (after the kiss and everything) that they would like their rings, please. ;o ) I loved how this was shared with the whole church body.

I kinda wish that it was more "normal" to have weddings incorporated into the Sunday Morning worship service. (And not just in order to get a big attendance bump!) :)
What better time and place than to exchange these vows then when the Body of Christ is gathered for worship anyway? I'd like to see a bit less "pomp&circumstance" in most weddings... but as long as they could be done within the context of weekly worship (as opposed to taking over weekly worship), then I think it would be good and proper!

A month ago a couple in our church wanted to renew their vows and they wanted to do it during the Sunday morning service. And they did. My husband preached a sermon on marriage that morning, and at the conclusion of the message he asked all married couples to come up front, face each other and hold hands while he and I sang, "Let's Begin Again." The song talks about beginning again while there is time left. Several couples were sobbing as they realized how busy they really are. It was an awesome service.

Oh, I just love that song, Donna! "Let's Begin Again" ... might be Franklins we first heard it from ... Barbie & (forgot!) Franklin.
