We do. We have plastic bags which we set at the curb on trash day. They contain either a) paper or b) cans/plastic/tin cans.

We recycle at the church, so we take all of our glass, paper, and plastic there. The company we use - in our area every resident contracts for trash removal - has been very slow with recycling. that is one reason we are moving to another company when our contract runs out next month.

We live in a semi-rural area, so recycling is done a bit differently.
We have a drop-off place where once a month we take newsprint, cardboard and plastics.
They no longer take tin cans, so we save 'em and give them to one of our kids to put in their curbside recycle bins.
We also recycle clear glass. We take those items to a nearby city when we go there. We can also take old phone books to this same place.

I'll say we do. If I go to throw some little teeny thing in the trash, my husband appears behind me saying "Has that got a number on it?"

Yep, we do. We don't have curbside pickup so my husband takes it to a dumpster-type thing when the box gets full. I also compost all the stuff I can and have three compost bins. I try to "close the loop" by favouring recycled products, too. Today I'm wearing a shirt made out of recycled Coke bottles! :laughing

we keep a bunch of paper bags in our dining room, one for each type of recycleable. We do not have a curb-side service, and also have to drive it to a local center. We can recycle glass, aluminum, plastics, paper, magazines (glossy paper), paper board, newspaper, etc...
I also keep a recycling bin for paper in my classroom and remind the kids to "save the earth" and put their papers there instead of in the trash.

We have curbside pick-up for newspaper, 1 & 2 plastics, glass bottles, tin & aluminum cans. There's also a dumpster you can take cardboard boxes to.

We do. Our town doesn't have recycling, but the elementary school does to pay for school supplies so we take our recyclables there.

I only chuckle because in our house I'm the one doing what your husband does :)

Recycling is easy here. One large blue bin is used for all types of recycleables. Bainbridge disposal has some kind of sort later. Makes it a simple process.

Yep. We have the ultimate motivation for recycling -- no trash pickup. We burn burnable trash (but not garbage). Everything else has to be either recycled or personally delivered to the local landfill (on a day not too wet) where one must dodge the garbage trucks and earth-moving equipment and try not to breath while adding to what others have dumped. Thanks to recycling, we have that unpleasant chore down to once or twice a year.
At one time, we didn't have trash pickup because it wasn't available where we live. Now a garbage truck goes by once a week, but we've been sorting and burning and recycling for so long, there's little appeal in the idea of storing up everything and paying someone to take it to the landfill for us.

I'm big on recycling. I have started a compost area in the new yard. It was one of my first things I got working on in the new house. I notice my neighbor has one too and we have chatted over our fence about how nice it is to have compost for a garden.
I have lived in places where there was NO trash pick up so you become extremely aware of what you toss out on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. When you actually break things down and burn them or bury them in a composter, or have to haul them away yourself, you become quite proactive in taking up less space and re-using. This is where my anti- plastic utensil/paper plate-cup stance came to life.
A GF had just moved and was all in boxes when one of her little ones turned 7 so I offered my home so she could give him a party. She lived in a neighborhood pretty close but they had trash pickup weekly and I didn't. The amount of trash she created in a single afternoon was terrible. Bag after bag of trash and she asked me where our cans were. I commented on the volume of it and said we have no trash pick up. She was amazed when she realized that she would have to take it all with her or I would have to make a trip to the dump. I don't think she ever gave any thought to it till that day, by the reaction she had.
After the plates were used I gathered them and started washing them. They were those brightly colored ones that are very sturdy plastic and have the separate sections for your food. She was shocked that I was washing them. I asked her if she could tell which plates were used and which were newly washed and she couldn't. I asked her why she was throwing them out if they can be reused by just washing them. I think I was as surprised that she was tossing out something like that just as much as she was surprised to see me washing them. I have a family member that puts them in the dishwasher and they turn out beautifully. I bet that 99% of people toss them out though. I am not fond of plastic cups etc. Such a waste and not eco-friendly. Let alone, you can't make a toast with them and "clink" afterward.
I love recycling. I see it as a friendly challenge every week. :o

Zarina - I, too, don't like paper/plastic plates/utensils. I have found some compostable ones. The cups are especially neat, they look just like clear plastic cups but say "compostable" on the bottom. Probably better to wash and reuse, but anyway, just wanted to throw that out there as I like composting and it's easy to gather everything up and throw it in the composter. Apparently there's utensils, too - I usually use metal ones, but I'd consider the compostable "plastic" ones could I find them easily.

Our new home came complete with a curbside recycling bin. I'm happiest that they take plastic grocery bags and newspaper! Those pretty much fill the bin each week. I have a list of what can go in the bin on the fridge and hope to get in the habit of recycling other items as well.
