I frequently participate in Bible Studies that cover a chapter at a time, but it has been a long time since I have participated in a "one sentence at a time" Bible Study. Tonight I focused on a sentence from the 1st Chapter of James:

Anyone who says he is a Christian but doesn’t control his sharp tongue is just fooling himself, and his religion isn’t worth much.

A could preach a whole sermon on that!!!

Yes so could I!!! I prefer the method of a sentance at a time study.

I can see why that one would take a while!

That is a very powerful statement.

Its interesting to read sermons from over 100 years ago (and on further back). Many of them are expositions on just one sentence of the Bible-- Spurgeon practiced this- as did John Wesley. Both of them were effective communicators of the Gospel. Sometimes slowing down is necessary. Of course, at the same time, I have found it profitable to sit and read all the way through a book (even one as long as Matthew's Gospel) with great insights and challenges being reaped as a result. Of course, I think a small piece that can be meditated on and really digested is almost always better than a long read of a chapter or more if its message doesn't sink in.
