This time of year is difficult for hikers, but it does have its advantages:
1. Beautiful color -- even though the trees are mostly evergreen, there are enough hardwood trees to provide some beautiful color.
2. Not many people -- on today's hike, I didn't see anybody on the trail. That can definitely be an advantage.
3. No bugs -- It is great to hike without bugs.
4. Wildlife -- one of the side benefits of fewer people is more wildlife. During the summer, I see elk only at the higher altitude -- high enough that most hikers don't get there. Today, I saw three!!!
