View Full Version : BARTSHEL.exe !!!

NOW what ... ?? Here, I finally tho't, "OK, I'll go with PeoplePC." THEN I do, finally get on Tuesday after a few days of their needing to do something at their end, and now two days later, suddenly this happens:
(1) Norton AntiVirus (that's been on here from the start, tho' has run out of its free deal, so has only old virus definitions, etc on it) suddenly pops up tonight, saying that there is a high level threat to my computer through this BARTSHEL.exe. Why didn't it tell me that Tuesday or Wednesday then?? Is it telling this to me now because it let things/something through that didn't try to attack Tuesday or Wednesday, but today for the first time ???
(2) Did a search. SOME sites mention, "no problem." Other sites indicate that it will leave one's computer vulnerable (sort of like we've already known re MSIE). So, which is right!? (edit: ALSO, it is the same website that has it on both its dangerous & no-harm lists!! Makes no sense ....)
(3) PeoplePC will not work without it, we find ... so what do we do??
DUMP PeoplePC, afterall, when we've barely started & it was faster
than the WalMart ISP, or ... ??? Or, what???
(4) One place someone said they were dumping PeoplePC because of this (also have noticed you can't seem to close the MSIE that opens with PeoplePC, even once you open Firefox and are using it!! They asked about TOAST (which I've read about in an ISP search, too). *** ANYONE HERE KNOW ANYTHING RE "TOAST ISP" ... ??? ***
(5) There's also a couple of windows that opened about that time that Norton warned me about it, too. One window said: "MS Web Checker." The other said says nothing ... remains open, tho' you try to "X"-CLOSE it ... a strange little symbols, as tho' part of that good/bad round curvy symbol, but a square cut out of the middle of that (sitting down on my task bar, that I can't close/get rid of). NO NAME ON THIS (empty) WINDOW!
(6) HELP! What does one do!? Thanks for any clue(s) re how dangerous Bartshel.exe honestly is or is not. Don't want to mess up this nice, new (well, last fall) computer with some file (bartshel.exe) that will give me trouble the whole time I'm with PeoplePC, if I stay with them, afterall. Bummer!
THANKS MUCH!

Yes, in all our searching around for various helps, etc,
http://www.spreadfirefox.com/node/20137
came up, which tells how to do a "normal" dialer (which is what I did with Triton). Now I'm wondering if I'll have to have some ISP #'s to enter into some form, too, or if what I put in the particular form ... without going to any ITP/whatever place, too, will be enough. Next time we go off-line, we'll try getting on through the other dialer in Control Panel.
Hmmm ... fun ............. ;)
Anyway, if this all doesn't work, still need to know whatever re this strange BARTSHEL.EXE file. Thanks!!

... my computer, per Norton AntiVirus: since someone from customer service suggested this place, we wonder if anyone has used them, and if they're OK ... safe ... whatever. THANKS!!

... I was done here. THEN I DL'd something (that suggested "web util"), and noticed suddenly that rather than having both Norton (tho' old), and AVG antivirus for it to be checked by, that AVG suddenly is not on that list!!!
So, I checked to see if it's open in taskbar ... yes, it's open. NOW what!? Appears something somehow has disabled part of AVG ... or all of it ????
About ready to call it quits for the night ... early. Maybe tomorrow someone will have some answers to all these weird things going on tonight.
THANKS so MUCH.

hello there, i'm from india and work as a technical representative for peoplepc, and here's some info abt Bartshell.exe.
we call the homepage the Bart page.. and Bart needs to be open as long as the connection is on. This is why any Bartshell error wud also shutshop the connection to the internet.
Since Bart works with internet explorer, u wud need to check your firewall/antivirus security settings as a possible cause of Bartshell.exe.
A simple and quick way to fix this is by going to the Peoplepc folder in program files, clicking on ispsetup and then on the Bartshell icon.
Clicking on it wil bring up the hourglass for a split second, when it disappears, restart your computer. This basically fixes the Bart files.
The last resort is, reinstalling the software, which will be the fix, only in rare cases in which ie on the computer is corrupt, will make this a chronic trouble.
Do call tech support for assistance or clarifications.

This task seems to have appeared on the scene in June 2003. It is installed in the folder structure created by the remote dialup software from the PeoplePC ISP, so we can safely assume that it gets installed when you install the PeoplePC software. While we are not yet sure as to what this task does, what we have observed is as follows : if we tell the end-user to disable it on the Startups tab of The Ultimate Troubleshooter, the endless popup advertisements that the end-user was complaining about, disappear for good. If the end-user re‑enables BARTSHEL, they come back ! We leave you to put 2 and 2 together .......
Recommendation :
In addition to the popup ads, some versions of BARTSHEL also generate scripting error and other crashes in Internet Explorer on some PCs – even more reasons to avoid this task ! What you do next depends on your version of BARTSHEL. Try first disabling it on the Startups tab of The Ultimate Troubleshooter. If you do not find BARTSHEL in The Ultimate Troubleshooter, then rename BARTSHEL.EXE to BARTSHEL.EXE.RENAMED ! You can do a search for it but, typically, it will be located in either “C:\Program Files\ISP40\bin” or in “C:\Program Files\ISP50\bin”. In our experience disabling BARTSHEL usually does not cause any problems with the PeoplePC connection. That said, if this solution gives you problems with your PeoplePC connection, then simply re‑enable BARTSHEL. If you are a technically advanced user, then try re-creating your PeoplePC connection manually rather than with the PeoplePC CD and see if you can connect through that.

[and even LATER yet] *** Have to amend this "YEEEAAAA!!!" I guess ... either it's the time of night (but wasn't like it last night), or it's because of that disabled (but risky) Bartshel.exe, perhaps, that it was much slower too this afternoon (but that had been "normal" for early afternoon), and this evening (which is *not* so normal for the last 2-3 days in the evening). Hmmmm ... have to pay attention to speed for a few days & see if I do really want to go with this one for a year! (PeoplePC, we mean).
***********************************
LATER !!! Hey! Not sure what else I did, since I'd done this to the Bartshel.exe files, and it was still acting weird, not letting me close it, etc. BECAUSE the last couple of times I signed on (this afternoon for a short time, and then just a few minutes ago), I was able to close the thing that pops up with PeoplePC without its then insisting that I disconnect. YEEEAAAAA!!!
********************************************
Thank you. This is something I read, and tried, even, last night. When I did this to the bartshel.exe files, PeoplePC would not even open, so definitely could not connect. In fact, I had to go into there this morning and rename them back to the original names to get back on via PeoplePC.
BUT, with the anti-virus guard suddenly, after three days, telling me that Bartshel.exe is a high risk threat, then I take it that it didn't tell me on day one or day two that it was a high risk threat, because nothing had tried to get through it on day one or two, but something risky did attempt to get through the bartshel.exe (looks like MSIE, actually, when open) that's open with PeoplePC is connected.
Have looked all over the place ... have tried this fix ... I wonder what there is that I'm not finding that can actually fix it. I read even where you don't HAVE to have this bartshel.exe OPEN, after you're connected, but anytime I've tried to close it, it closes PeoplePC, and you're disconnected.
*ANYONE* know re this "TOAST" ISP that I saw asked about elsewhere???
Thanks, Paul ... and thanks for anyone else who hopefully knows something, too.

don't quite "get it." Yesterday it finally let me stay on-line, tho' I'd managed to close the PeoplePC bartshel.exe.
NOW TODAY, I can't get it closed; it keeps insisting on wanting to log me off if I try to close it. Not sure what I did differently yesterday that I managed to get it closed completely. WEIRD, weird, weird .............................
