I was called to the ICU last nite to accept a patient...the ICU nurse in charge let out a sigh whch spelled RELIEF when she greeted me with this statment..question

"You are an old nurse aren't you Judy"

Me...I suppose i resemble that Kathey

"Then you have cared for persons with Bacterial Menigitis?"

Yes (where is this going)

"and you must be immune to this highly contagous disease..as you are still here..and alive and well!!!"
Then she related how she was so frihtened to care for the patient (that was being transferred from another hospital) as she feared taking the deadly organism home to her baby

So an OLD NURSE donned the yellow isolation garb (looking like Big Bird) was highly respected in the ICU last night

AND she is still well..alive and kicking..me the nurse

I have yet to learn how my patient fared

oh yes - those wonderful stylish gowns. Boy, they get hot, don't they. Sometimes i feel i am smothering in those things. But, i wear them and wear them proudly. i am not afraid to gown up. Interesting to see ones afraid to gown up. It is almost that they are admitting there is a problem if they gown up, if they ignore it - it will go away.

Yes- old nurses (not to mean age but experience) do have the respect of us who are watching and noting the *how* the textbooks are coming alive.

I can understand her fear, and I respect your willingness to care for this patient. I'm so glad that your experience in nursing has taught you how to nurse, while staying safe.

I call the yellow gowns our "banana suits". Unfortunately, I look more like a yellow delicious apple whenever I put one on.
