The Cubs may soon be announcing the acquisition of RHP Matt Garza from the Tampa Bay Rays. At age 27, Garza already appears to be an established starter.

Evidently the Cubs think that what they have in place is enough to compete within the NL Central in 2011. I'm a-thinking that they're putting too much confidence in a late season rally that was long over-due in the process of the way that 2010 played itself out for them.

The Cubs will be giving up several of their more well-thought-of prospects, including Chris Archer, who many saw having a chance to either crack the rotation at some point this season, or to spend his last year here in Iowa tuning up for the role in 2012.

To me this appears more likely to be a move that backfires in the long-run than it does to be one that shores up a leaky starting rotation, even in the short-run.

Here's hoping I'm wrong on that.
