I have been thinking about changing my phone service to Broadband. For about the same price as I get basic phone service, I can get Broadband with unlimited long distance.
My concerns are:
1) 911 service
2) My burglar/fire alarm servcie
3) Quality in general.
Have any of you switched to a broadband provider for your basic phone service? If so, how do you like it?

I have been thinking about changing my phone service to Broadband.
We have looked at it too. In fact, I was pretty interested in it until a few weeks ago. When the hurricane sideswiped us it must have done some damage to my broadband connect. I have had 5 tech visits, but, since the problem is intermittent, they can't find it.
If I had broadband phone, every time my internet has gone out my phone service would have been gone too.
With the cell phone, we would have something to fall back on, but I am not ready to have a telephone that is dependent on the broadband technology yet.

Last evening we had a power outage for more than an hour. I have a UPS for the phone system, but not for my internet modem. If I changed to a Broadband phone connection, I would need to add a ups for it too.
Thanks for your input.

The only thing I like about Vontage is their music and commercials.
woohoo woohoohoo...People do stupid things....like trade in a phone service thats works, and has been improved on for hundreds of years, for a new unreliable technology just to save a few cents. woohoo woohoohoo...
And no I'm not calling you stupid for considering it...the above just sounded good.

Since I first posted my question, I have talked to several people who have tried broadband. The conclusion seems to be that it works well if you have a really good broadband service (which I do).
Our broadband internet service is provided by Comcast, a large company with lots of resources. Our telephone service is provided by Centrurytel, a "mom and pop" telephone company headquartered in a small town in Louisiana.
At this point, my primary concern is reliability. Since I have lived in Gig Harbor, we have not had any telephone outages, but have had several cable outages.

I have never had a problem with my Centurytel phone service or broadband connection. Just giving kudos to Centurytel.
