There are two bridges at Marble Canyon. When the new bridge was built the original one was left in place for "foot traffic" and sight seeing. We stopped there on our way home from the Grand Canyon (Mar 15, 2011).
While on the foot bridge I noticed a bird on the highway bridge. Looking at it through field glasses I realized that it was California Condor C4.

That is a great privilege. Linda and I have seen several of the Condors in teh Grand Canyon. I wouldn't call them "pretty" but I do call them "awsome."
Linda and I are headed to the Grand Canyon day after tomorrow. We have reservations for two nights in the bottom of the Canyon.
Tell us about your trip. We usually cross Marble Canyon on the way to the North Rim which isn't open yet.

I just read the Wikipedia article. According to Wikipedia there are 192 known to be living in the wild. The total including those in captivity is 381. In 1987 all 22 remaining wild Condors were captured and placed in breading programs. Increasing the number from 22 to 381 in less then 25 years is definitely progress.
Dave, We just spent the day on the South Rim. The facilities, walkways and viewing areas have been vastly improved our previous visitp about five years ago. The temperature was 69 degrees with a very light wind. I took a lot of pictures; however, didn't do any of the hiking things you are noted for. Even though the signs told us the North Rim road was closed, we went around that way anyway. It was a road I hadn't driven, it was a nice day, so, why not? (I'm glad I did!!!)
(More picture will be posted in the near future.)

After a bit of research I have determined that California Condor D4 was hatched right here in Boise at the World Center for Birds of Prey (http://www.peregrinefund.org/world_center.asp) in 2005, is a female and was released into the wild in 2009.

I don't know about the numbering system. We saw this one in the Grand Canyon in 2009.
It is the same bird featured on the NPS website: http://www.nps.gov/grca/naturescience/california-condors.htm

Here is a link that may be helpful. (http://www.birdfotos.com/birdfoto/condors/condor_information_sheet.htm) As you can see, number 87 came from the San Diego Zoo.
