Jones, the wealthiest man in town, was a member of First Church. An IRS agent called the Pastor and asked if Jones was a member? The Pastor said he was.
The agent said Jones had claimed a $100,000 contribution to First Church on his 1040 tax return. The IRS wanted to know if he actually had given that amount?
The Pastor said he would check with the church treasurer and if Jones hadn't...he soon would!

Names are changed to protect those involved. In one church where my father pastored, the Sunday School Superintendent came to him and requested a letter to support the amount he had claimed on his tax return. My dad asked him how much he had claimed. When the records were checked, there was no record of his having given any thing. He claimed that it all went into the loose offering. When all of the loose offerings were totaled, they weren't enough to cover his claim. When my dad declined to issue the letter, he got mad and organized an effort to vote my dad out. Fortunately, the effort failed.
