Americans in history, who I have admired because they overcame extreme odds, making something of their lives. One of these was a boy who had 6 brothers, and since they were poor, they had to live in a series of tiny houses, sharing bedrooms. Many times this young child was responsible for the woman's chores but he was faithful. He was not a brilliant student, even had to repeat his freshman year in high school, mainly due to an old injury. He attended West point, but only stood at about the middle of his class. He applied to the US Navy Academy at Annapolis, but found out that he was too old to be admitted. There could have been a lot of reasons why this fellow could have called it quits and been content to live a regular non exciting life, but he didnt.
He became a student of the great Douglas McArthur. In fact this military leader was so impressed with him, that he wrote,"This is the best officer in the US Army. When the next war comes, move him right to the top."
When this young man started out in his military career, he and his wife moved almost a dozen times in seven years (a challenge to anybody!) He enrolled in the army's Command and General Staff School, and graduated first in his class of 245. One of his well known one liners was "Dollars and guns are no substitute for brains and willpower."
This man had willpower because George Marshall put him in charge of the War Plans Division. He was the one who planned D-Day, Normandy Beach, and the Battle of the Bulge. Later, this young man, who didnt do so well in college, became the President of Columbia University for 2 years.
Finally he was urged by both Republicans and Democrats to run for the US Presidency. He said "I am a soldier, and I'm positive no one thinks of me as a politician."
He met and married Mamie Doud on Valentine's Day, after presenting her with a miniature copy of his West Point calss ring. There is so much that I am leaving out, but this young man who had so much against him became our 34th President of the United States, Dwight (Ike) D. Eisenhower. He not only was a great soldier and a great General, most important he was a great father and husband. He no doubt many times supported his wife, as she was afflicted with a disorder that sometimes caused her to stagger and stumble as though she had been drinking.
This man was faced with many hardships, and was discouraged many times, but he overcame these so well that he will long be remembered in our history's textbooks. If you are struggling to live more than a normal life, or are downcast and ready to quit, DON'T! Study these men. Find out how they became strong, and became victorious! Learn the secrets of their sucesses, find out their habits which were building blocks to a full satisfying life. You CAN do it! I believe in you!

He is one of my heroes! When he was running for president I wore the "I Like Ike" button everywhere I went. I've always thought he was a special person - right up there with Lincoln!
