We have a Rookery several miles from our home. We brought my Great Aunt/Mom to see the Great Blue Herons....they were MAJESTIC! I'll share a couple of the pictures .... Enjoy! We sure did! The picture of the flying Blue Heron reminded us of some sort of prehistoric bird.... jill
(I hope the picture loaded! If not, I'll try again!)

Thanks for the picture. I love to watch the herons, too. Your picture is a good one. I have quite a few heron pictures, but have not been able to get close enough to get the detail that you got.

They appear so graceful except when they takeoff or land. Everytime I see one take off, I think they are going to crash. They streatch their necks way out in front and their feet way out in back. Their wings are so big taht they barely have to flap them. Once they are in flight they are majestic, but getting from the perch to flight makes them look clutzy.

Yesterday morning when I put the dogs out, there were three turkeys in our backyard. Their takeoff makes herons look pretty majestic even in takeoff. When they fly across the road right in front of one's vehicle, it is a little scary.

Dave

Did you ever encounter "Gooney Birds" on Midway or Wake Island??

Your description of the heron reminded me of these clumbsy adorable birds
..adorable until they are caught in the engine of the aircraft you are a passenger!

BTW not referring here to the DC 3 vintage airplane

What neat pics!
Thanks for sharing with us.

We have a few herons that stay in our area, but I don't think they are the Great Blue variety. They are probably Blue Herons, but the the "Great" type. They appear to be much more plain than the ones in your pics.

I greatly enjoy your pictures Cecil! Keep them coming!
We went back to see the Great Blue Herons today and I have a funny picture of a "husband" and "wife" and another one of 3 nests on one tree with 3 heads sticking up: the females sitting on their eggs! We had such a GREAT time watching the Herons!

Those are very nice pictures. I've never seen a nest before. We have them around here but it is very hard to get a picture of them. They usually see me before I see them and they take off when I'm a long ways off.

(Neat picture of YOU, Joel!)
I took so many pictures yesterday and today .... it was thrilling! In the Rookery, you see the big birds coming and going! They look so MAJESTIC and then when they stop and perch, they look so skinny and so unlike how they look while in the air! Hmmmmm....must be a Spiritual lesson in this.....
anyhow.....here is the Rookery and you can see LOTS of nests all over....
(using my zoom lens gave me an extra bonus in being able to see the Great Blue Herons.....)
