View Full Version : Mentos in Diet Pepsi

1. Open a 2-liter bottle of Diet Pepsi.
2. Place an index card over the mouth of the bottle.
3. Create a paper funnel with the small end about the size of the mouth of the bottle.
4. Hold the funnel over the index card.
5. Drop 8 Mentos brand chewable mints into the funnel.
6. Remove the index card so that the Mentos drop into the Diet Pepsi bottle all at once.
7. Jump back. The Diet Pepsi will spew a good 10-feet into the air, instantly.
8. When you dump the leftovers from the bottle into the sink, the Mentos appear none the worse for wear.
I have a short video of my son and I doing it in our back yard tonight, but it's too much trouble to shrink it down to a managable size, find some program that lets me rotate it right side up, and upload it to my website for your viewing pleasure, so you'll just have to take my word for it, it's spectacular.

Much better thing to do with it than drinking it! :basic05
Also, hope you didn't learn to do this outside by first having done it inside ... oh my! ;)

Sunday at church I heard that if you mix chlorine bleach and brake fluid it makes a lot of smoke. I kind of worry about chlorine smoke though so I don't think I will try that one.

No, you still have to try it, and outside. The eruption goes way higher than that guy's bathroom ceiling.
You can't get more entertainment value for $2.00 anywhere! ;-)

Could you imagine drinking 8 to 10 ounces of the diet Pepsi then poppin' a number of Mentos? Massive stomach explosion! UGH!!!

Awww, come on Barb. You had sons, didn't you? Boys are always up to something wierd. My husband (34 yrs) and his best buddy (52 yrs) recently stuck a CD in MY microwave. I had to turn my head away and stick my fist in my mouth so I wouldn't yell at them. LOL! The microwave survived and still works good. The CD on the other hand... the foil type stuff on inside looked like crackled craft paint. Do the "boys" ever really grow up? :basic05
I do not advise anyone to try this experiment.

I was putting something in the microwave one time and a fly flew in. I shut the door and cooked what I was cooking. The fly flew around like nothing was wrong. When I opened the door, it just flew away. I wonder if it had any offspring? I wonder if they were normal? :basic05

LOL!! Back in the 80's we knew some young boys who stuck a frog in the microwave. Unfortunately...... he did not hop out! From what I understand the frog compusted. If that was my microwave, it would've gone in the trash!

A couple of the boys in my youth group asked me what would happen if they put play dough in a microwave. I told them nothing would happen at all. So while I was elsewhere in the building that put the play dough in the microwave and set it for 90 minutes. When nothing happened after a few minutes they walked away without turning off the microwave. When we returned from the basement of the youth center an hour later the upstairs was filled with smoke. The microwave was ruined just due to the smell that could not be removed. The play dough was as hard as a rock. The youth center smelled bad for a month. Sure glad it didn't happen in the church building.

We're having a family get-together this weekend at our daughter's home.
So.... here goes with the Mentos/Pepsi experiment.
I hope to have pics to post by the middle of next week when we get home.
Should be a fun time with the family!
Oh, and we will celebrate Mother's Day, just as a sidelight.

We had a Church Board retreat this past Saturday. I went and bought a bunch of mentos and a few bottles of Pepsi, the diet type.
I had the Pastor help and it shot up real high. (maybe because I put a whole pack of 14 in!)
We are having youth tonight. Mark Doble and I will be putting on a demonstration...

I hadn't figured it out until now--but those guys are from Buckfield, ME (about 40 minutes from where I grew up). They were in our newspaper this morning, because they are going to be on Letterman tonight (weather permitting), and possibly the Today show tomorrow morning
You can get more of their videos at www.eepybird.com. The video at www.eepybird.com has a Mentos ad at the end, so some sponsorship money must have come through.

Happened to catch them telling about this just before it happened last night, tho' I'm not a "regular viewer." Yeah, I was doing that "male thing" ... channel-flipping. HA! Anyway, it was interesting, a regular "musical fountain," the way they took some bottles while they were going off and swayed them to the music. Strange, but funny. ;)

They had quite a few bottles and it turned out to be a beautiful display.
The 2 men were displaying the reaction to music and tilting the bottles in different directions
It was very interesting.
It reminded me of all the times I ate Mentos after a meal and finished of a glass of Diet Coke.
I don't remember anything unusual happening, but it's hard telling what it was doing to the stomach lining.:gen05

I won't tell you not to worry about your stomach lining, but...
Everything that I've read about this phenomenon (and my discussion with my father the brilliant physics teacher) indicates that the reaction is more of a physical reaction than a chemical reaction. The carbonation process is actually saturating (maybe super-saturating) the soda with the carbonated gas. The Mentos are actually covered with millions of microscopic pits which provide surface area for the carbonation to come out of solution.
By the time the soda is in your stomach (or even in your mouth), most of that gas has already come out of solution (a lot of it came out when you poured it in your glass--for the same reason--the glass/cup provided surface area). And, that gas is going to come out of solution inside your stomach anyway--Mentos or not!
Now, the banana-Sprite reaction is something different, and I think that probably is a chemical reaction. Anyone ever seen the banana-Sprite thing done? (You get a bunch of teens up on the platform for a food-biathalon--round one is eating, round two is drinking. The food is a banana, the drink is Sprite--and it creates quite an eruption in their mouth when they try to drink the Sprite.)

Thanks for the photo Joel. I did it twice with the boys (ages 8 & 11) that are visiting and never jumped back quick enough to see it! The Dollar store sells a roll of Mentos for $.69 and I got a 2 litre or diet cola at Dollar General for $.50 Most entertaining $1.19 I ever spent:D
A few notes
Tape or otherwise fasten that funnel
Don't kneel or sit down to put the Mentos in the pop
The person doing this trick should be able to run REALLY FAST!!!!!
Have a towel on hand, "just in case"!!!

The way I understand it, it would work with any carbonated drink. So you may as well by the cheapest pop you can find. It could be my imagination but I think some of that clear pop that Walmart sells has more carbonation than most others.
