View Full Version : Why are some posts in such small font size

Some of the posts are so difficult to read. Isn't there a minimum font size? Should be, maybe?

You can chose your fonts and your font size when you post. Some fonts are smaller than others. As we get used to this software people will learn which ones they need to make bigger. I have trouble reading some of them too.

Well, I can read your reply even without my glasses! :basic03

I use the Netscape browser, and all I have to do is hold the control key down and tap the "+" key to increase the font size.
Conversely, the "-" key decreases the size.
I'm not sure that works in Microsoft Internet Explorer, but it may be worth a try.

What I was getting at, is some are using really small font sizes. Or the font itself is really small. Yes, we can enlarge on our side but should it not be that there is a min size for the fonts? I would (or anyone else) have to keep going back and forth to read some posts and resize for others.

Walt, you will notice that others aren't having the problem you describe. Is it possible that you are using a smaller monitor with an already small font size? I haven't seen anything on this forum that was too small for me to read.
Well, I have to add, that I can't read anything anywhere without my glasses!
:)

I had noticed that some posts have very small font size. We can post this small
But probably this is the better size.

Scott, an example is Belinda's post about dancing all around. The font she is using comes up barely readible. I can read it but it is a chore to do so. I really don't like the idea of having to go and change font sizez for the whole screen to read certain posts and then resize it to read others. I have mine set on normal. 90 % of the posts are all the same size and are easily readible.

Let's see how this posts. If it is really small then we can see it together.

Must be doing something wrong. It didn't seem to change the font or size. Prob has something to do with where the HTML code is before and after the message.
This one seems to work. This is what I was referring to.

Walter,
I agree that a small size and a times roman like font make for difficult reading. But then I think, that is up to the person to decide. If I want to communicatie clearly, I'd better use a good readable font and font size. Otherwise people won't read my stuff.
So from a reader's point of view, I read what is readable. I like proper punctuation, proper use of capitals, and a nice and readable font. If I find a message that not even remotely complies, I just don't read it.

That was hardly readable.

The print is small - smaller than I like, but I have no trouble reading it. If you were looking at it on my monitor with these settings, I think you would say the same thing.
I remember years ago I was talking with someone about a web page and I said that it was a way too dark color combination for me. We went back and forth about it for a few days. Come to find out, my monitor was going out! They happened to use a color combo that exactly matched the early problem on my monitor!
I was telling them the truth, the colors were not good on my screen, but when I got a new monitor they looked okay to me too!
I am not saying your monitor is going out or bad, but I can tell you that the all the fonts I have seen are readable here -- although some are smaller than necessary so far as I am concerned.

What constitutes readable? If you have to strain to read it, is it still considered readable? I just checked dictionary.com and found these two definitions of "readable":
Easily read; legible: a readable typeface.
Pleasurable or interesting to read: a readable story.I agree with Walter that some fonts in a few posts are just waaayyyy too small. They are not "easily read." So, there are those of us who have noticed the use of extremely small fonts that are very difficult to read, yet haven't said anything. I would also tend to agree with Hans, that if it is just too small to read, why bother even trying to read it?
So let the poster beware! If your font size is too small, your post may not get read! :gen02

Well I wasn't trying to operate under a strict definition of "readable" -- if it has to mean easy to see, then I will retract my use of the word and change it to "I can read everything I have seen on NazNet so far."
I did note that I thought some fonts were smaller than I like. However, they were no where near being impossible for me to read.
I do agree with this -- if it is hard for me to read, most of the time I just skip it. That is true of taglines, signatures, or text of messages.
Edit to add -- I guess if I really want to see something blown up, I just click on View - Text Size -- make it the biggest size, read it, then change it back to the medium setting I use.

Changing font size has NEVER occurred to me.
Since I'm pasting text/lyrics most of the time
maybe I should make them larger - eh?
(he said as he squinted to read these very words.)

No, Nelson, I can read your posts without any problems.
I can read most of the posts just fine, but a few people use smaller fonts (I won't name them) and some add colors that may not be easy to read.
A thought just occurred to me... that I have my monitor set for 800X600, and my guess is that many of you have your monitors set to 1024X768 or higher.
At higher settings, all print is going to appear to be smaller.
I have always liked the 800X600 setting because everything is easier to read, even on my 19" monitor.

Well, I just happen to LIKE 4 better - this size, rat cheer.
Could it be that it's because I've recently had a drastic change in eyeglass prescriptions (including bifoculs) and haven't - as yet - forked over the $249 for reading glasses - just to see this monitor a full 29" away?
Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw!
So size 4 font it is for me from now on, I guess.

well, perhaps -the better response would be to write the person directly and ask them - rather than post publically your offense with their post.
*smiles to you*
i would have been glad to have edited the post, Walt. Now???? HMMMMMMM........

FYI.....i went back and looked at the post, as i considered changing the font size.
i didn't *CHOOSE* to make the font size small. Rather, i had chosen a different font style and the default of that particular font style is that size.

So size 4 font it is for me from now on, I guess.
That size is more that enough for me. You may be using "Verdana" "4"
This "Verdana" "3"
This is "Verdana" "4"
This is "Arial" "3", which I prefer.
But that is just a preference.
What I don't like is "Arial Black" "4"
And red (any font/size) does not do much for me either.
Enough of this "experimenting."
Have a good evening.

Well, as far as the writer wanting to make the post readable- honestly, i hadn't come back and read the post.
i have been here but haven't had time to go to all my posts and review them/nor responses.
Again, if someone has a problem with something *i* do - or something that someone else does - you may get a quickly positive response if an email is sent. i read my emails faster.
Apologies folks

Sorry, I didn't mean to point you out, it was the first one that I could find. There were a lot of posts that are really small. One of the reasons is that I have my settings for 1280x1086 or something like that. I was just curious as to why they were so small. Didn't think it would be such a big deal.So sorry, forgive me please.

Forgiven - sincerely and gladly.
It was a surprise when i come on and found pages over the issue, and i never knew a thing about it - when i am the one who was mentioned.
i just felt badly, cause i hadn't relooked at my post after it had been published. i had no clue it was that small.
Now, to the question. The answer that you are looking for is that it isn't that ones are always choosing to make the font small. i rarely ever change the size of the font because i don't want to offend by shouting. i do acknowledge that smaller font can also be frustrating and equally offensive. So, i think that as we experiment, we will find - together- which fonts will need to be modified and which ones won't have to be.
Just as some font colors hurt my eyes a lot. i think the size is equally important.
i do think the subject is important and needful. Thank you for bringing the issue to the table.

Belinda,
Try changing the setting (don't remember which one it is--sorry) in your User CP to WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). I changed to the font that I think you might have been using (Garamond), which is one of the smaller fonts in the list. I could immediately see as I typed that it need to be enlarged, so I set it on 3 instead of 2. Otherwise, it looks like this! This (4) would be even better and it isn't too big and doesn't appear to be shouting. I realize that you don't have a lot of time. Neither do I, but just a couple of minutes a day of exploring options can yield big dividends. ;)

Thanks for the words, Betty. I actually already knew about that feature. I had used it when this software first became available to us. When I mentioned time, I was referring to time to read all the posts of NazNet. It was within buried posts that I even found that this was an issue.
As for the feature you speak of - I don't like it for reasons other than the positive one you mentioned in your post. I reset my opinions back - weeks ago.
The beauty of all of us being different and liking different things.
The beauty of accepting our differences and celebrating them - rather than trying to put us all in the same mode.
Thank you for the helpful thoughts-
Have a great day -
