View Full Version : Candles and men's underwear

Once we move to standard time, I take advantage of the early darkness by burning candles. I find it soothing.
We don't have a fireplace in this house (its only failing) and I was looking for a way to group some candles together as a focal point when Carl and I are relaxing in the livingroom.
Several years ago, I bought some decorative birdcages at the auction for a few bucks. I have always kept plants in them. But I decided to take the one that was in the livingroom and see what it would look like if I put some candles in it instead. I like the look. In the darkness of the room, it looks like a miniature cathedral. I found it very soothing last night.
On a completly different subject (I just grouped them in the subject title to get your attention) why is it that men hold on to their underwear forever. I was folding some of Carl's the other day and I was amazed. Holes, waistbands separating from the fabric, thin spots.
"Don't you think these should be thrown out?" I asked.
"Nope", was his reply.
Are your husband's the same?
Below you will find a picture. Of the candles, not the underwear :-)

to the underwear question. I am told they are more comfortable when they are worn out.

I will admit that I found myself raising my eyebrows at such an INTERESTING topical title. ;) LOL
the candles look really pretty, and *no* to my DH and his undies - they get holes, they go in the garbage.

My husband is not the same - he definately lets me know that it is time for replacements. But then as a boy, he used to ask for socks for Christmas.
My 19 year old on the other hand ... has never said anything about the condition of his undies.
on another note. I figured out the quote thing - use the big button above the reply thread not the little button under.

Well...I know what Santa will be bringing him for Christmas.
I hadn't notice how his underwear had deteriorated because several years ago we all started doing our own laundry. But the other day I noticed he hadn't had a chance to empty the dryer so I did it for him.
That's when I had my revelation.

The candles are really pretty. You had a good idea. I don't use candles much. Probably because I don't have a sense of smell.
As for the underwear, I have a tendency to let clean laundry sit in the basket for a couple of days (especially the whites), so Don wouldn't throw any out, afraid he would run out (he is incapable of searching through the basket of clean clothes. I haven't figured out why). I throw them out when I get tired of looking at them. I just bought a new package for him, so I'll throw some old ones out when I get around to folding Saturday's load of laundry.

Although I do like the smell of candles, I like the light they create more. It's such a soft, gentle light.
Often in the evening, Carl and I like to have a cup of tea together by candlelight and talk over our day.

I usually light candles at Christmastime, but I'm always so nervous about a fire that I can't enjoy it. I guess it's because we had a fire in our apartment building several years ago.

I can understand that.
I have a fire extinguisher in my front hall closet...very close to my livingroom :-)

I went downtown to the library this morning, only to find that they had changed its opening time to 10:00 am. So I went across to the coffee shop and had a coffee while waiting for it to open. There was an old Reader's Digest there. Your post reminded me of one story I read.
A little boy was visiting his grandma and he watched as she took the clean clothes from the laundry room and put them away.
He asked her what these "rooms" were. She replied that they were "closets" and assured him that he had closets in his house. He said no, they didn't.
In an attempt to clarify, his grandma asked him where he got his clean clothes from to wear.
He replied, "From the drier." :-)

Well your title sure gets the interest going :) !
My hubby is the same (sorry Garth), he gets very annoyed with me when I finally throw the old undies out. Same with old t-shirts, I actually pull bigger holes in them so he cannot possibly wear them anymore.....
The candles look lovely in that bird house, what a good idea. I love candles, don't burn ones with scent too often though, Garth really dislikes those. But like you Barbara, I love the light they create so without scent is okay.
Garth does not share our opinion on that matter though.
When we were only dating for a couple of weeks, and I was still trying véry véry hard to please him :p, I made a candle light dinner for us. First thing he said when we sat down to eat.......if I could please switch the light on so he could see his dinner  ! Married him despite that! Since then we compromise between candles and halogen-lights :basic05.......

Well, I can totally relate to the men's underwear.......-- believe it or not, this is true........
My husband received a very nice bonus recently from his work. I mean, we're talking in the thousands, okay?
So a couple of days after the bonus came, we were out running errands, and here's the comment my husband made:
"Well, since I got that bonus, I guess I should spend some money on underwear."
I thought I was going to die laughing!! I don't know what he thinks underwear COSTS (I usually buy it)!! HA HA HA I said, you know, honey, I think we can afford underwear even without that bonus!!! HA HA HA
We're like you, Barbara, everyone pretty much does their own laundry at our house. So, I haven't been paying attention to his HOLY underwear!!! I guess I need to get out and buy some, though!!!
I'll see it for sure when I start loading up our new dresser. We have clothes EVERYWHERE in the living room and family room because we sold our former chest of drawers and haven't finished all the painting, etc., for our room yet. So when I start loading the drawers, I'll say goodbye to some of that HOLY underwear!!! HA HA Oh my goodness!
Crazy men.
About the candles, though, they look lovely in the bird cage, Barbara. That is a great idea!! I just ordered two very nice tall candlesticks (yes, from EBAY), that will go nicely on our new dresser. We use candlelight a lot at our house. I have candles all over the bathroom when I take bubble baths. We eat by candlelight sometimes, as well. Even our kids enjoy doing that!
I really don't care if they are scented or not, but Lindsey bought a "sugar cookie" scented candle for me for Christmas last year. I burn it in my office while I'm working, and I love the scent of cookies baking!! So she just recently asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year, and I mentioned that I'd love another one of those candles! How EASY was THAT!!

I control the laundry and underwear at our house. John never throws anything away...but I do. I have finally convinced him that his white socks he wears to walk every morning are not expensive to replace, so he does throw them away when he gets holes in the toes....or they go in the rag back.
White socks with holes in the toes make great dust rags.
I love the candles in the birdcage.

i tried to respond this morning - computer froze - and i had to run out the door to study group.
i had to laugh, cause i tell Garry that he takes --- "being holie - too literal"
The boys aid me in noticing his eagerness for hole-i-ness - and aid in the crime.
hehe

OK I'm gonna tell on myself. My husband does the same thing, wears them till they wear out. But, what I do IS, when I catch him with a pair on that has holes, I run him down, hook my finger in the hole, and rip them off. And that is all of the story that I'm gonna tell.

HA HA HA -- Doris you are hilarious!! Now, I would do that, too, but, quite frankly, it would GROSS LINDSEY OUT -- I'll have to wait a few years to chase him around the house in holy underwear.......LOL

I have to confess, I'm the one with 'holy' underwear. It is not a matter of them being more comfortable, because they most certainly are not! Its a matter of where the money goes. The kids get things long before mom, and there is never enough to go around. Does duct tape really fix EVERYTHING?

Very true.
I always bought for my children before I bought for myself. We went through times in our early pastoring that we were living below the poverty line. I wore my share of shabby underwear.
But now that I have a choice...I don't.
Carl also has that choice but it doesn't seem to bother him.
But in case I haven't told anyone on this board lately...I LOVE MY HUSBAND TREMENDOUSLY!!!!!! I mean...look at the gorgeous face beside me! That smile. That face. I thank God everyday for him.
