View Full Version : Lindsey's summer project.....

As you all know, Lindsey is heavy into dog training these days, and she's even toying with the idea of making that a career somehow -- training dogs for the movies or commercials, or training dogs for Paws with a Cause type of organizations, or whatever........

SO, this summer, she has taken on a "dog" project.

We have a friend who has a dog named Tiger. He is about the most hyper dog we have ever seen. He has been banned to the back yard. He gets petted every day, but he never gets much attention. Our friends love him and have tried to train him, but he has been pretty much labeled "untrainable" by them.

Lindsey's goal is to have him obedience trained by the end of the summer.

So, my friend told her son what Lindsey was planning to do.....and other than Ebony, Lindsey hasn't really taken on the job of training a dog on her own. This is a challenge for her.

So my friend's son made this observation, which has really tickled me --

"Lindsey taking on Tiger as her first dog training job is sort of like taking up hiking and starting out with Mt. Everest."

LOL

We'll take pictures......

Have you ever watched the television show, "Dog Whisperer?" It's amazing how the host can gain control over the most out-of-control dogs. He only uses his voice and the leash and collar. He sometimes puts "back" packs on the larger work dogs and it seems to give them a sense of purpose.

I recorded some of the episodes. When I find the DVD, I'll have to burn you a copy and send it to you. I need Lindsey to spent the summer with our Husky, Alaska. She has calmed down some with age but is still very active. I saw on TV the other day where they're breeding miniature Huskies now. They still have the same nature but are only smaller.

Oh yes, Beth, we watch it!! There are few, if any, DOG-related shows on TV that we don't watch!! HA HA Have you read Cesar Milan's book? I haven't had a chance to get it yet.

I had forgotten that you have a husky named Alaska -- I think that is so cute. Do you have pictures of her? Yes, HYPER goes along with the breed of Siberian Husky. They are very high strung dogs! Our Ebony is half sibe. But they are beautiful dogs, aren't they?

it is going to be a fun, but challenging Summer.

We look forward to seeing lots of pics.
I wonder who will win....
Maybe Lindsey will take up nuclear physics after this... something less challenging.

Well, it's not going to take a huge chunk of time really. With dog training, 2 or 3 short sessions of 20 minutes or so per day is about all you should try. It's mentally taxing on a dog to do more than that really. Especially at first. Once Tiger gets a little further in his training, and he will (LOL), she can spend longer periods in training.

And our friend's house is only 0.3 miles from our house -- sooo that won't be taxing on Lindsey!

I figure it will be an interesting summer!

Danny and Sonja have a Yorkshire who could really benefit from a little help from Lindsey. Or they should go to kindergarden with Mildred. This dog is so hyper I think he should be medicated (just kidding - well maybe - no that wouldn't be right - ok no medication.)

Have Lindsey do a Goodgle on Alaskan Klee Kai's. They are beautiful little dogs.

I've not read Milan's book but would like to. I'll have to check and see if our library has it.

Our Husky could really benefit from it.

I love all of you people that love dogs. I have a Jack Russell.
Nine now, but acts like maybe 2.
I am suppose to be good with training and had not a notion I would not be able to train any dog.
Well I have met my match.
House broke rather instantly, but from there on out it is a battle.:)

Tonight while on a longggggggg leash, she took off after the barn cat's. She had a ball until her leash caught on the trucks tire. I said, "you are something else Hattie", she just laughed at me.
Could Lindsey maybe come stay with us for a year at least.:)

Marg -- have you ever seen the JRT races on TV? They are sooooo fascinating to watch. Those dogs can RUN fast!! If you have a hyper JRT(that's an oxymoron -- they're ALL hyper!!) find a job for him to do -- as in fetch every day for 20-30 minutes, or work on some other tricks of some kind that you can do at home that will make him use his very intelligent mind. Exercise him -- not just walking on a leash, not enough for a JRT, but make him RUN for at least 20-30 minutes every day, like get him a little dog frisbee -- you'll find a different dog in your house if you do those things. Tire him out. JRTs are not lap dogs!! Remember: A tired dog is a good dog!! HA HA

You'll be surprised at what a difference exercise and working will do for a JRT. Amazing!

Here's a neat little web site about the JRT -- did you know they are now called Parson Russell Terriers????

I am a terrible dog trainer. I can't even get them to come when they are called. I probably could train them to chase cars or bark at passers by but there is no demand for dogs that do that. My last dog (photo attached) was barking at a rabbit one day. He was at the end of his chain just going berserk. So I let him loose. He took off after the rabbit. The rabbit ran around the corner of the house and stopped. The stupid dog kept going. I caught up with him 20 minutes later many blocks away.

On a serious note, I saw a TV program once about dogs that could tell when someone was about to have a seizure. They didn't know how the dogs could do it but there is a place training dogs to be with epileptics to warn them when they were about to have a seizure. Anyone else heard of this?

Saw something like this long ago ... probably on PBS. Amazing, the sensitivity animals have to us humans, isn't it!? :)

Our Jack Russell is very much aware when either one of us need help.
She will run to the one that can solve the situation and bark and grab the person to come help.
Also she will not allow my husband to get into bed. She bites him, so I hold her and he get's into bed and all is well.:)
I don't know about the seizure article, but this dog of our's is very protective and just watches us, like some children do their elderly parent's.:) it really is comical.
She also climbs book shelves and picks out what she wants to chew. I really need to write a book about her. A real comic.

I saw that same program, Joel. It was just recently and I can't remember the name of it. They mentioned that they were researching the fact that a person who is about to have a seizure may emit some sort of scent that only a dog can pick up on. I thought that was fascinating!

Hattie does not have the chance to run free since we have moved away from fenced land. So I walk her on a long leash and run her around and around on it. The other day, she had enough and just looked at me like, look Lady, I am tired".
Thanks for writing.

Yep, he was my dog. His name was Buttons. Someone dumped him off in our neighborhood when he was barely weened. Our mailman found him and was going around knocking on doors trying to find his home. At that time of day, no one was home and the mailman had mail to deliver so I said I would find out who he belonged to. We wound up keeping him. His fur would get very long like a sheep dog and would be a mess by the end of winter. (we kept him outside) Every spring I would take him to the vet and get him butched. He would look like a little sheared sheep. By fall he would look like that picture.

My wife and I both work and no one is home for 8 to 10 hours at a time. I wouldn't have chosen to have a dog. We just sort of got stuck with this one. Like I said, I am no good at training dog. I brought him in a few times during extreme cold weather and he just wanted to run around and mark his territory. He was quite hyper even as an old dog. I had a wire running clear across the back yard. I had his chain hooked to a pulley on that wire so he had plenty of room to run. I hate it when a dog is tied up in one little area or a small kennel. Pretty soon they are running around in a muddy pig pen.

We had him 8 years. I never got him "fixed." Maybe I should have. Anyway some neighborhood boys started teasing him and making him bark. Then he turned mean and bit someone and I had to get rid of him. A month or two later I saw one of the boy's mom down town. She asked me what happened to my dog and I told her. I think her son got an ear full when she got home.

Oh that is so very sad, Joel. Yes, it's true. If a person is not a "dog person" then they shouldn't have a dog. Just like if a person is not a "cat person" -- whatever animal suits your lifestyle and how much time and love you're willing to give it should determine what kind of pet you have. I love cats, but I'd never have one because I'm not a "cat person" -- but I love seeing other people with theirs. My mother-in-law is definitely a CAT person!

I've got a Toy Poodle and a Chihuahua that she can come and train.

If she can't come to South Carolina I'd be more than happy to send the dogs to her. (one way of course) (-:

That is so sad Joel. You are to be commended for rescuing the dog. You didr you best at that time.
I had an a neighbor that had to put her dog down. He would not quit spraying the sofa. I know now, this could have been corrected. I tried to have her take him to the Humane Society but she refused. It was a nice dog too.
Thanks for being so good to this adopted dog. Sort of being like a homEless person and you took the animal in. THANKS.!!

Marg.
