Does anyone know (or know how to get) the answer to this one...

What percent of our churches (USA) are named, "First Church"?

What percent of our churches (USA) are named, "Central"?

I just Googled "First Church of the Nazarene", including the quotation marks, and got 192,000 hits. "Central Church of the Nazarene" got 12,500 hits. I'm pretty sure those aren't the right answers to your questions, but the answer is certainly "a bunch". ;-)

Off the subject, but....

In a town about 25 miles from our last pastorate there was a church named "Hope Baptist Church." They had a church split and part of the congregation went just a couple of miles down the road and build a new building and named the new congregation, "New Hope Baptist Church."

The pastor of First Baptist in our town told us the history behind the names and then said, jokingly, "Next, that church will split, move down the road and build "Beyond Hope Baptist Church."

I just had to share it.

My father held, devoutly, to the theory that the more bitter a church split, the more likely one of the successor churches would be called Grace.

(and I've joked here about others doing this very thing!)

Last week we went past a church named - and I am NOT joking - - -

"I Am My Brother's Keeper Covenant Church"

I smiled.

And that's all I'm going to say about that!

Is it really "First Church?" After one, why shouldnt it be Second Church?" What is the meaning in the word? Or am I reading more into it than I should?

Don't know of a Second Church of the Nazarene. Years ago in Nashville there was a Third Church of the Nazarene. Don't know whether or not it has ever had a name change. Have seen several Christian Science churches that are ordinally numbered.

In Redlands, CA, there is a Second Baptist Church. It is a black congregation affiliated with the American Baptist Convention. It received that name when it was organized out of, and with the help of the First Baptist Church. Church is nearly 100 years old now, so the name probably won't change.

It is very common around southeastern Missouri to have the First General Baptist Church and Second General Baptist Church in towns.

It might just be a U.S. thing. When I was in Mexico, the summer of 1987, I was posted at Tercera Iglesia del Nazareno (Third Church of the Nazarene). Another group was at Eighth Church of the Nazarene.

"Hope" must be a Baptist thing as well. I grew up in Columbus and know of several "Hope Baptist" churches. Isn't it funny how certain denominations tend to have naming patterns?
