The title says it all. While I know it is a very long season, is there enough info in to declare this pitching and defensive remodel of the Sox a failure?

What do you think?

Not yet. They're chasing the two best records in baseball right now in the Rays and the Yankees. 30 game leaders are flash-in-the-pan as often as they are sustained success, think about how many times the Blue Jays have led the AL East in April the past 20 years, and how many times that's translated to success in the regular season.

I do think it will be a tough season for the Sox, but I'm not as ready to call them a failure as I am to call the Rays a success.

It's difficult to call it a success when the third baseman they hired because of his defense has been a sieve over there.

To be fair, his fielding percentage would make a phenomenal batting average...

I'd like to see a 30 game string with Ellsbury and Cameron in the line-up, but I'm not sure it would be much different.

On May 20th, the Sox were 8.5 games out of first, 9 in the loss column. Today, June 6th, less than 3 weeks later, they're 3.5 games back, 4 in the loss column. That's quite a difference. And they still haven't really heard much from Ellsbury and Cameron. The pitching from the Young Bucholtz and John Lester has been really good of late and the offense has been better than expected, with Ortiz coming out of his slump with steroid-like numbers. If Lackey and Becket come around, the Sox should only be harder to beat.

the BoSox are now in sole possession of the lead in the Wild Card race by one game (2 more wins than the Rays), and 1.5 games out of first in the East. The division is still wide open, but with only 4 games to go before their season is half over, I think it will be tough to call the Sox a failure unless they seriously fade in the next 3 months.
