View Full Version : In "New Posts," I don't see mine

I have used vBulletin for years, and haven't ever come across this issue previously. I've dug around in "Edit Options," but am missing something surely.

I visit here and after "User CP," I always hit "New Posts." Even after I post, I so not see threads I've begun nor those to which I've responded.

Is this a forum-specific setup option?

Thanks so much,

When you hit "new posts" it shows you all the posts you haven't read.

I think the software assumes you have read your own post :)

I think the software assumes you have read your own post :)Yep, I'm sure you're right. I usually do read my own replies. ;)

But so far, threads that I authored are not showing up in "New Posts" when someone else posts in them. Does that make sense? They're only showing up in my User CP.

(Well, now that I said that, I just used "New Posts" and saw that you'd posted in it. Hmmm...earlier, Joel had posted in one of my threads and I had to go hunting it down through "Subscribed Threads." Hiccup maybe?)

I am accustomed to seeing all "New Posts," including my own, but perhaps that is a setting particular to NazNet's utilization of vBulletin.

ETA: AY!! I just hit "New Posts," and there it was. All new replies including my own. I am now losing my mind, although happily, and prefer to go to bed. Good evening. :)

This second post of yours showed up in my "new posts" view.

Edited to say: Welcome to NazNet. You are in northern Japan? Wonder if you might send a post card to my niece who collects cards?

Sure I would. Why don't you PM me her address.

How old is she? I have several daughters and the one closest in age could write it.

Well, Shellie, I didn't see the thread with the note re fonts in it pop up in "new posts" , so I'll tell you thanks [I]much in this thread you've started.

That dafont.com has some really neat fonts! And, furthermore, they show up in the list of fonts when using WORD, so I now have more fonts to choose front. Still have to DL more ... there are so many neat ones!! Especially like "Chopin Script" ... and then there's "Daisy Script" for a less-formal-looking script than Chopin. Wow! Love that website! Have looked for free fonts before, and don't recall dafont.com ever coming up in the search.

Thanks again, Shellie.

My issue addressed in the top post is still with me, but if others are also missing actual "new posts," then we know something's up. :)

Just realized that maybe the moderators hadn't responded. Maybe they haven't seen your question. Scott or Hans...could you help?

Barbara, I have seen the question but I don't have a clue. Scott is more technical than I am, I hope he has an idea.

Shellie,

I'm not sure I understand what's happening and for sure don't know why it's happening, but one thing you might try is using "today's posts" rather than "new posts". It's on the "Quick Links" menu. That way you see all the threads that have been active in the past 24 hours. Those with posts you haven't read are listed in bold print and have "mail" sticking out of the envelope on the left. Personally, I prefer this to "new posts" because when I get to the first non-bold, closed-envelope entry, I know that threads above it have had new posts added since my last visit and none below it have changed.

I still sometimes miss whole threads, but this seems to work best for me.

Welcome to NazNet, by the way.

Marsha

Hi Shellie -- if I understand the issue I think the software is working as it should. When you post a message, and click on "Submit Reply" you are taken straight to what you just posted. So far as vBulletin is concerned, you have now read that message. If you then click on "new posts" it will exclude what you just posted because you just finished reading it.

The exception is that when, while you are posting a reply, someone else is posting at the same time. When that happens, your post may come in a second before theirs and, when you click on "new posts" it will show that thread.

-----------I think------------

-----------I think------------:rolleyes:I see what you're saying. I think, although, am wholly unsure, that vBulletin is acting slightly different re: New Posts here than the one other place I have used vBulletin for years (4-5 maybe?).

Being familiar with the software, I'm sure you know that each owner of vBulletin can allow or disallow certain user functions/options and I was wondering if there was a option I hadn't seen and/or checked off to allow me to view activity on my own recent posts.

Perhaps it's the timing on "What IS 'New Posts' for this use of the software?"

For example...I post on my own "Welcome" thread then visit "New Posts." Granted, you are very right. I've read that post. :) My point of reference is the other software application, that actually keeps that post up in "New Posts," and I can keep tabs on it. How many views it's getting without posts, how far it's falling down the board, etc.

Another reason I wonder if it's not a software timing issue (dealt with by each owner) is because on my other board, immediately after I post to a thread, it shows up in my "User CP." I can see that I was the last poster, how many more views without posts, etc. It takes several minutes, maybe 10-15 before it drops off my User CP and I need to click "Subscribed Threads" to see it if there is no activity that keeps it in User CP.

At NazNet, when I immediately post and hit "User CP," there is nothing there. It's immediately put into "Subscribed Threads," I'm assuming because, as you said, the software knows I've read it.

I appreciate you taking the time to listen. I am one of those highly adaptable Nazarenes. I'll flex and deal. :-)

I also like Marsha's suggestion to use "Today's Posts" in Quick Links rather than "New Posts." It seems with the timing/software being the way it is, other folks are perhaps missing a few threads/posts that way as well and have found the workaround. Community is great.

MarshaTHAT is a terrific suggestion, and I can assure you -- I wouldn't have come up with that on my own. :-) Thanks. I use Quick Links for a lot of things, edit sig, edit options, who's online, etc. but I've never noticed "Today's Posts," and it performs the exact function I'm looking for.

I had started using "Today's Posts" as a guest to get it to show my own threads, but hey -- your idea is great.

What a welcome. :) Teachin' me new tricks.

Thanks.

Maybe the difference is that, due to the relatively small size of this forum, we can use the most aggressive Database update available to vBulletin. When we first started the forum some were confused about how to find what they had read and what they had not so that option was turned on. I imagine that other forums you have used have it off. This setup pretty much keeps up with what you have read or not read in real time.

Anyway, glad you are enjoying NazNet and finding ways to customize your use of the forums here.

In the list I see, "mark forums as read." Now, I don't ever want to do that to all of the forums. So, I've never dared click on it to find out if that's what it does ... marks them all ... or then brings up a list of the forums for one to pick from. For instance, might want to mark one or two forums as "read" since then the new posts won't show up when clicking "new posts."

So, is that "mark forums read" an end in itself, marking all threads, or one that leads to a list of the forums so you can individually mark them ... or not???

Thanks!

I did copy the following from my education board:
Threads: 17,645, Posts: 220,676, Members: 9,766, Active Members: 5,592

Comparatively huge. Thanks.

Thanks!Gina, if you go to individual forums, there is a "Forum Tools" at the top of the thread listing, (not up there with User CP), and under it is "Mark THIS Forum read."

The one in Quick Links is indeed an end in itself.

Thanks for that tip re its being an end in itself ... perhaps it needs to be renamed, "mark all forums read," sounding a bit more final than "mark forums read." ;)
