View Full Version : How do I keep up with who's talking to me?

I sometimes post a reply in a thread but don't keep actively following that thread. However, if someone replies directly to me, says something about me by name, quotes me by name, or whatever, I'm always interested in that. Is there an easy way to search for every post that has mentioned my name within the past day, week or whatever, rather than every post that has ever mentioned my name?
And can I be vain and insecure enough to ask a question like that without seeming vain and insecure? ;-)

Well, Brad, join the human race ... where some of us feel like this infrequently ... some, often ... some, most of the time ............... ;)
Oh, yeah ... since you're feeling "insecure" at the moment, we love you here at NazNet, Brad. :p

Dear vain and insecure NazNetter (aka BRAD), <-- does shouting your name help?
What you need is a scout, someone who is reading all the posts in all the threads in which you participate and will notify you when it's time for you to respond. Good luck with finding such a person.
Buried and unnoticed responses does seem to be one of the drawbacks of this software.
I want a slightly different feature. One that tells me when a thread I've passed by due to time constraints has a brilliant and witty entry that I would love to read amidst all the ordinary posts. It's easy to see who started the thread and who posted last, but there's no way to know what has happened in between times. The only approach I've found is to go to the profile of a known brilliant and witty person and see where they've been posting. But there are too many brilliant and witty people around here for me to keep up with them all so I miss a lot.
By the way, this is a response to you. You should read it.
Just trying to be a blessing. (I've learned from the best.)

Wow, yes a scout would be great! And the "Find Brilliant, Witty Posts" button would really be wonderful. And of course, if it's a thread I started, like this one, I do try to keep glancing back at it from time to time to see if anyone's still addressing the original subject, and I certainly try to keep up with any thread I started when it's still recent, so I would have found your reply without the very helpful note that it's a response to me. But thank you so much anyway.
Anyway, I think we've done some good brainstorming on how to improve the software, and I'm sure Scott will now get right to work on it. I want a first officer to whom I can just say "make it so" like Capt. Pickard did on Star Trek Next Generation. ;-)

What if we create a new forum: "Interesting posts forum" and ask only those who are posting interesting posts to use it? Then, you could just read that forum and get all the good posts. Everyone else could go on doing their dull posts on the existing forums.

Could you? That would be great. Thanks! ;-)
Of course, the real "problem" is that we just have so many participants, so many fascinating threads and posts and people that it's impossible to keep up with all of it.

What a brilliant and witty suggestion, Scott. We can all vote on who has the most interesting posts and only those people would be allowed to post on the "interesting posts forum". If someone posts something dull there, they can be given a "time out" with a warning to add some sparkle to future entries.
Yessirree, the days of a level playing field on NazNet have gone on long enough. Jesus chose an inner core of people for special privileges. Why not NazNet? (I was reminded of Jesus' exclusionary approach to relationships in a Bible study book this week. I'm pleased to find further application for that lesson here.)
I'll look forward to the implementation of this.
Marsha
PS: I hope you make the cut, Brad, so you can know when someone has said something interesting to you. :basic03

Well, here is the special announcement - an "interesting post forum" has now been implimented. To be fair, only those who do interesting posts and allowed to post in this forum can actually see it, after all we didn't want people who are excluded to feel bad. So, all those of you who post interesting articles can now see the new forum.
The rest of us will have to go on using the other forums.

Okay, you know how "lol" means "laughing out loud", and gets typed lots of times when we're only mildly amused, and not really laughing out loud at all?
Well, I was actually LOL when I read that. A genuine, prolonged, loud guffaw. Very clever. Thanks.
Of course, I went straight to the Interesting Post forum right away and started posting, and reading the interesting posts of the other witty people. Thanks for all you do.
Brad
P.S. I just wanna be a blessing, and I know you do, too.

Brad, the only option I know of is subscribing to a thread. That way, the software will notify you is someone replied to the thread. But that is not quite what you are looking for, I fear.

I see it! I see it! (Stop to put on glasses.) Oh I guess I don't see the new forum, it was something else. Guess I am on my back to the less interesting forums.

Brad, I personally think it is amazing that you feel "jolly" enough to continue posting. And, if they won't let you on the new forum, I will refuse to be the moderator of it.
SO!!
