OK, the continuing saga of home decorating......here goes....We had a cornice built for our bedroom window. A cornice is usually made of wood and covers the top of your window. Sometimes they are upholstered with fabric. WELL, ours is made of wood and will have fancy molding in the center of it. The wood is about 10 inches tall (top to bottom when you're looking at the window), and the molding (swirly acanthus leaves, etc, very mediterranean) is about 5-1/2 inches tall and is positioned in the center of the wood and spans its length.
Well, I'm using a crackle finish on the wood and a bronzing/antiquing finish on the molding. The idea is to make it look old.
I've never done this before.
Wish me luck that it turns out right. I'm about to start on it now!!!
This piece looks gorgeous in my brain -- just hope that it looks the same in real life!!!
I'll post pictures if it does! But it will take 48 hours to finish it, because you have to wait 24 hours between some of the coats.
We shall see......LOL

Oh, one more thing!! After I finish the cornice, I'll tackle stenciling the ceiling with a similar pattern to the molding in the cornice!!! I liked the idea of having a border go around the ceiling instead of the walls. I'm not sure just yet how I'll hold my head and paint stencils on the ceiling, but .........well......stay tuned.......LOL

You might have to lay down to paint the ceiling - like Michaelangelo. Hope it turns out the way you want it to.

Well, the crackle paint project turned out beautifully!! I'm sure that if I did it again it would be even better, but for the first try, this is GREAT. Now I'm going to have to find something ELSE to try it on!! This is really fun.
Now, the molding is still a work in progress. You have to let the first color dry for 24 hours before you start the glazing and rubbing off process. I'll do that one later tonight.
Right now, my computer is giving me fits, so I'm going to have to focus on that for a while........it is probably going to involve a trip to Phoenix tomorrow.....Oh well, I'm thankful it is still under warranty -- it could be worse. And I'm thankful that everything is backed up. ::::sigh:::::

I'm now working on the molding. The computer problem is solved -- I go to Phoenix tomorrow to get it fixed. How much easier could that be? LOL
Now, for the molding -- well, I'm not as happy with it as I am the crackling. I have about a 10-inch sample that I'm working on, so I have some room for play. I'm going to add a little darker paint to it and wipe it off, and see if that helps. I just need it to be a little darker. Then I think I'm going to dry brush some of the blue on it just to get a very very very tiny hint of blue in the mix. but again, this is just a practice piece -- the REAL piece is waiting for me.......

Please come to my house and put some white crowne molding in our dining room and living room. I think it would look so good with the blue in our living room.

Yes, I agree, that would be beautiful in your house, Marsha. However, I would not know where to start doing crown molding!! This is molding for the cornice, that's it! If I was to do crown molding myself, I think I'd try that easy crown molding that they advertise on TV -- have you seen that? It looks kind of neat, actually.
Oh well, sorry to disappoint you. You're going to have to get a molding installer!!

Sounds lovely - i can't wait to see the pictures.
Sounds very similar to what was in the bed and breakfast that our church sent Garry and it to.
Lovely lovely.
