Well, I was born in Oskaloosa IA while my folks were attending Vennard College. Dad took his first church in Missoula MT. He was a Free Methodist then, I think. My sister, Mary, was born there. He was there 2 or 3 years and then moved to Guthrie Center IA. My other sister, Sara, was born there. This is the first place I remember. From there he moved to Beaver Dam WI for a couple years. I went to kindergarten there. Then we moved to Spooner WI. That was his first Nazarene Church. I went to first grade there. Then Dad took a very small church in Boscobel WI. That church did not have a parsonage so we had to rent which was a problem. At first we could not find a house we could afford in Boscobel. So we rented a huge farm house near Blue River WI and I started 2nd grade there. Then we rented a house in Boscobel but we were only in it for 4 months and the owner sold it. So we moved to another house on the edge of town. It was a small house and so in about a year we rented a larger one. Then Dad hurt his back and I had a compound fracture to my arm and we didn't have insurance. Dad usually just had minimum wage jobs and the church only paid $15.00 a week. We couldn't afford that house any more. Dad found a farmer who let us live on a second farm he had for free just for taking care of some calves he had on the place and keeping the lawn mowed. I loved that place. I was part way through the 3rd grade when we moved there and I just started 6th grade when we left. From there we moved to Wyoming IA. Dad helped start a Nazarene Church in Maquoketa, 16 miles away, and worked for a Nazarene layman in Wyoming IA. I finished 6th grade and started 7th grade there. Then we moved to Maquoketa IA and rented a house across the street from the junior high. We lived there about a year and a half and it was put up for sale. So my folks bought an old junky mobile home about a mile from town. It wasn't fit to keep chickens in and after a couple years they bought a brand new double wide mobile home and put it on the same spot. I lived there until I graduated high school and left home. After my sisters graduated, my folks sold the place and left too.

When I left home, I moved to Oskaloosa IA, where I was born. (Why I moved there in another story.) At first I rented an up stairs apartment above a pizza restaurant right down town. I had problems with some really bad neighbors in the other apartment and I moved to another apartment building owned by a man in my church. It was an old house that had been converted into apartments. The one I moved into was real small. After a while the up stairs apartment became available and besides being bigger, I loved the apartment, so I took it. I got married while I lived in that apartment. We lived in it for another year. After I got married I needed a better job so I got a job in Pella, which was 16 miles away. At the time the highway there was a narrow 2 lane highway with a lot of traffic. It was a nasty drive in the winter time and it was impossible to pass anyone on that road. So then we rented a house half way to Pella near the town of Leighton IA. We lived there for several years and both of our girls were born while we lived there. Then we got broken into and my wife was afraid to be there alone at night since I worked nights. My wife didn't drive at the time either. So we rented a house in Pella IA for a little over a year. We had a really bad landlord (slumlord). I ran into a Realtor one day and she talked me into looking at some houses. Before we knew it, we bought one just a block away. We've been there ever since. Now that the kids are gone and my wife drives, we would like to live in the country again, but so does everyone else. So we can't afford anything around here unless it is way out in the sticks.

Well, of course, the U.S. is historically a very mobile society. My dad was drafted into the army just before I was born. My mother went to Gary, Indiana to be with him for my birth, then they moved to Highwood, Illinois, just across the state line from Gary. Daddy got out of the army when I was a year old and we moved back to Arkansas, which was their (and really my) home state. Then in 1964, Daddy took his first pastorate. My other towns were Daddy's pastorates, except for my first Bethany stay, which was while he was studying at SNU for ordination. My second stay in Bethany was after I left home for the last time, and was a student at SNU. Jonesboro, Arkansas and Tucson, Arizona were for my graduate school time at Arkansas State University and University of Arizona. Phoenix was for a job when my graduate assistantship at UofA wasn't renewed and I couldn't afford to stay in school without it. Dallas was to settle down and make a life. Garland and Frisco are just suburbs of Dallas. We moved from an apartment in Dallas to our first (and second, nicer) homes in Garland, and then moved to Frisco to help start the church, NewStart-Frisco.

Before I was an adult we moved around a lot. While I lived in Kansas City the first 15 years of my life it was in several different houses. As a teenager we moved every year, back and forth between two cities in Kansas but because they were both in the same school district I went to the same high school from start to finish. The moving set a pattern that seems to have followed me into adulthood. In the military we were transferred around a lot so it just continued. What is so funny is that my wife, on the other hand, has her mother still living in the same house they owned when Donna was born so she never moved prior to getting married but she seems to have caught the bug from me. I'm not sure about moving a lot. Many involve college days and most people seem to move away from home to go to college. I actually noticed most of the ones who put dates in their posts have been settled in the last place for many years. Perhaps the earlier years were single life, married and finding better jobs/places to live, and finally settling down where the kids could grow up.

Perhaps this is easier:

Chanute, Kansas 1957-83
(I was only in Grand Prairie two months)

El Paso and Albuquerque 83-84 (nine months)

Oklahoma City area 84 - present

(Mustang, Bethany & OKC were just moves from rentals into our current purchased home)

So I've been in this area for 22 years.

Gina Stevenson

... there might not have been so much moving, probably wouldn't have, if two things were different:

(1) the railroad didn't let seniority rule, even in their offices, not just out in their yards, and

(2) had "back home" been a warmer climate!!

Believe that once I can get back to some warmer climate than MI, I might just stay put in the same area for a good long time. ;)

Even I haven't been to Nabb, Indiana, and I've been about everywhere in Indiana.

My list is pretty short.

Shipshewana, Indiana 1958-1975 (except for two or three school years when I was a preschooler in Logansport, Indiana where my folks rented housing during the school year while my dad was teaching there but went back "home" in the summer)
Bourbonnais, Illinois 1975-1977 (Olivet)

Odon, Indiana 1979-present (26 years on the same five acres)

Even I haven't been to Nabb, Indiana, and I've been about everywhere in Indiana.

What's bad is that we didn't even live in Nabb. It was "town" for us! However, it is very easy to pick out the exact place where I was raised. It is where Clark, Jefferson, and Scott counties meet. Our farm house was in Clark County, but it sat just across the road from the Scott/Jefferson county sign. These days the house is gone (it was 140 years old when I was a kid), but the location can always be found by the county sign!

Paul, welcome to NazNet ... your name sounds so familiar. Did you and your wife attend Manteno Naz for awhile? Seems I recall some Paul Danner & Sue(?) Danner from the time I was at ONC/U & attended Manteno Naz.

Austin, TX was our "official residence", but we never had a place to live there. When I was in the Air Force, I decided that I wanted to attend Law School in Texas. The difference between "in state" and "out of state" tuition was significant. So, more than a year before I would start Law School, I went to Austin, TX and filed an affidavit in the court records saying, "I am physically present in Austin, TX and hereby select it as my residence." Do to other changes, we never moved to Austin, but it was our official residence.

During the time I served at ENC, we kept our residence in Gig Harbor, but I still think Quincy belongs on the list. We spent a lot more time there than at some of the other places we have lived.
