View Full Version : Need a good protein drink?

Since I'm diabetic, it is most difficult to just "grab" a snack or quick meal. I have to take into consideration the carb content of everything I eat.

So, I thought if I had a good protein drink, it would be something I could drink "on the go," which I am quite often! Especially at lunchtime.

I have tried every protein drink on the market, I think. I just cannot handle the taste of most of them.

Well, someone introduced me to the Atkins Advantage drinks. I still didn't like the taste all that much, but at least I could tolerate it somewhat. So I bought a few of the creamy vanilla flavored ones.

Then I got a bright idea. I mixed a tbsp of peanutbutter in the creamy vanilla shake and blended it for about 10 seconds. DELICIOUS!!! I have now found a new favorite food!!! I drink one of those with my breakfast nearly every morning now. It is really delicious.

Now I make about 3 shakes every morning and put them in air-tight containers in the refrigerator. That way I have ready-made shakes for when I'm going to the office or working in my home office and don't have time to stop for lunch or whatever. Not only do they stay fresh tasting, but they get just a little thicker in the cold and taste even better! I can grab one and drink it in the car on the way to the office. And it is only 8 grams of carbohydrate with the peanutbutter added.

So if you're on a carb-conscious diet, this is a great snack or meal replacement for those times when you're on the go.

Delicious!!

Edit: I actually don't make 3 shakes every morning! I make 3 shakes, then when they're gone, I make 3 more -- sometimes it takes 2 or 3 days to get through 3 shakes. I usually only drink one a day......just thought I'd clarify that!!!

i have a friend who is part of a team that is evaluating diabetics and long term care/quality of life. There are teams all over the US involved in this extensive study. i immediately thought of you - but there is no team in AR.

I'd be interested in the results of that study. Do you have a web site where there is information on it? It is 8 years since my diagnosis -- I'm healthier now than I was THEN.

Dana, I'd like to try them.

How are they packaged and in what area of the grocery store?

They are across from the breakfast section in one of the stores I go to, they are in the diet drink section at WalMart, they are in with the Ensure, Boost, etc., in another store.

In other words, I would ask.

LOL

They come in chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. I think I'm going to try the strawberry next and add a few strawberries to it, maybe a touch of cool whip or something. That would only add a few carbs to the shake, which has I think 4 carbs. The chocolate mixed with the peanutbutter reminds me of a Reese's cup!! LOL YUMMY.

I'll let you know how the strawberry tastes. They are rather expensive (packaged in a box with 4 shakes -- about $5.50 at Walmart), so I have hesitated to buy the strawberry so far.

But, like I mentioned, I only drink about one per day on average.

Website? Good question. One i didn't even think to ask.

Because of your sharing here at NazNet, i thought you would make a wonderful addition for their study.

i will see what i can find out. This lady isn't in my life on a consistent basis.

Well, whatever you can find out -- it would be interesting. Seeing as how the oral hypoglycemic medications cause my blood sugar to RISE instead of LOWER, I would probably be an interesting subject!!! LOL

(EDIT: I think it should be rise and not raise. So I changed it!! LOL)

Belinda,
I would be interested it that study too. I almost always have an elevated blood glucose when I get up in the morning. The rest of the day I am usually fine. I try to be careful with my diet.

Well, have been going to make some of this fruit around here into a drink the last couple of days; after reading this yesterday, I just had to this morning. Drank a bunch of it, and have a bottle in the fridge for tomorrow (maybe later?).

I threw in 4 fruits, a bit of grape juice, some protein powder that's partly whey, partly soy, powdered vitamin C (w/flavonoids, & calcium which buffers C acidity), a bit of "sour salt" (citric acid) since it needed a bit of "zing," as it ended up being a mite sweet. THEN -- was wishing I had some plain yogurt, or yogurt of any sort, to put into it.

Anyone ever have "NOURICHE" ... ?? Have always liked that since first tasting it ... tho' it's nearly $2/bottle, I'd always wait until it was only $1, & buy a few bottles. It's rather like these "yogurt/fruit smoothies" they have of all sorts... but this had vitamins ("nourishment") in them, hence the name related to that.

Having always liked that "vitamin taste" (perhaps due to the ViDaylin, or whatever, liquid vitamins I had when I was a kid), so Nouriche was one of my favorite yogurt drinks. Can't find it anywhere now, tho' I see from the web it still exists; apparently some stores have stopped carrying it.

ANYWAAAY ... I took a couple of vitamin/mineral tablets, got out my mortar & pestal I do spices with, and they smashed up rather quickly/easily; not so hard as I tho't t'would be. So, this was also mixed in along with the other powdered stuff. Reminded me of Nouriche! Don't have to look for it anymore ... I can make my own. Only have to get some plain yogurt now to add to all this. ;)

THANKS for the fruit-juice making push, Dana! Now, I have to make some veggie juice again this afternoon, or tomorrow AM. Have gotten a mite lazy about this, after being yelled at for even trying to make veggie juice for too many years ... so when I make it, I will fill up 3-4 bottles, and drink it over a couple of days, tho' it's actually best for one to drink it immediately ..............
