Someone sent me this video last week.
The sad part is that only a handful of people were saved in the room.

The handful of people were 'left behind'. That's how I viewed it anyway.

Right, the ones left behind are the ones saved. Just like Noah and his family. Here's the passage the preacher was quoting:
37For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. 41Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. 42Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
The preacher quoted verse 42.
This is perhaps a more meaningless ("negotiable") example, but it's sadly amazing how incredibly much folk theology commands our thinking and ways.

I don't believe in folk theology, I believe in the Bible. :basic03

WoW -
i knew that people could hear things totally differently - but i never dreamed that people could see things so totally differently.
To me, the room almost completely emptied. Most all in the Church were resurrected. Only a very few people were left behind.
Your description is the direct opposite of mine.

I knew what the intent of the video was. I was just responding to it in light of what the passage that the preacher quoted actually says.

Amen!
The Bible tells us that those who are "left behind" are the ones who are saved, or conversely, that the ones "taken" are the ones who perish.
Of course, this is directly opposed to the various "rapture" theories and the book/movie series that recently claimed the world's attention. I assume these form part of the "folk theory" to which you referred.
I heartily agree. Thanks for making the point.
However, the video is still effective for so many who have received, accepted and carved in stone the "rapture" story that has been around for a couple hundred years or so.

How can I then read 1 Thes 4:16-17?16 For the Lord Himself will descend from Heaven with a shouted command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together at the same time with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. (bold mine)
The usual Rapture theories as far as I know, stem from these verses of scripture. I see your reference to Mt 24:37-42 as showing how sudden and unanounced the Rapture will happen, not that the ones left behind are saved.
I realize this can become a heated debate amongst some, but am just curious on what you guys think.

Rather than me trying to re-invent the wheel, Garth, I'll refer you to two well-written pieces on this subject that are not written by me, but that reflect "my thoughts" which you have requested:
Dennis Bratcher: [http://www.crivoice.org/rapture.html]
Jirair Tashjian: [http://www.crivoice.org/secondcoming.html]
You indicated that you were curious on what I (as a part of "you guys") think. This would reflect what I think fairly well.
No desire herein for 'heated debate'; simply a view that is different from the "rapture theory" position.

"......overtones of judgment, that the people who are oblivious to their responsibility to God will be caught unaware when God requires accountability"
to me this is the entire Story of Scripture. that statement sums up the entire reason for the Bible and for Jesus coming to get it thru our thick heads. and not just at "end times" but the end of every single waking hour. Glory to God.

Since we've had already two people starting different threads about the same video since this one, I figured it might be useful to keep the original one on top for a while.

I just have two thought provoking questions in response to the clip:
Did you notice the preacher was Australian?
Do you think it is possible the guy in the red shirt was "left behind" because he was wearing flip flops or sandalls in church?

I had assumed the whole church was Australian and upon watching the video a second time, I think the Australian flag is in the middle in the back of the sanctatorium.

You mean that Americans aren't the only ones who try to nationalize their sanctuaries? I really thought that was probably just an American culture-thing...

Actually, there are many national flags at the back of the room. The US flag seems to be hanging right next to the Australian flag.

Yes they are...sorry. You will never see a flag in an Australian sanctuary, well not normally anyway. My presumption with this video was that they put all the flags there to suggest this may be anywhere in the world.
