Remember the old hymn called "The Ninety and Nine?"
well theres a verse that goes:

"Lord, whence are those blooddrops al the way
That mark out the mountain's track?
They were shed for one who had gone astray
Ere the Shepherd could bring him back.
Lord, whence are Thy hands so rent and torn?
Theyre pierced tonight by many a thorn
Theyre pierced tonight by many a thorn."

Remember the old hymn "The Haven Of Rest?"
well theres a verse that goes:

"how precious the thought that we all may recline,
Like John the beloved and blest
On Jesus' strong arm, where no tempest may harm
Secure in the Haven of Rest."

Consider all the theology we find in the old hymns, here is a very short list:

His Grace:
When we confess He pardons
He keeps us through affliction
He gives me strength as my day
He covers me with His hand

as in "It Is Truely Wonderful" and "He Hideth My Soul"

Heaven:
Walls of Jasper
City of pure gold
No trials, battles, sickness, death tears, envy, strife

as in "The Purely White City"

The Atonement:

Our names written on His hands
He intercedes for us
We are reconciled to God through
the atonement

as in "Arise My Soul Arise"

How much of our basic theology could be written just from these hymns?

From the time I was a baby ( I guess ) my mom used to sing that to me while she rocked in a rocker . My earliest memories of it are the visual images I had and most particularly from the verse you quoted . I had visions of someone with a knife and blood all over . What she was singing as a sort of lullabye was instead very frightening to me . When I was older and read the hymn I understood it wasn't like that but those early years it was a fearful song . I guess its not a song that should be sung to the very young .
