View Full Version : If I had been given $20,000 :-)

Eleven years ago we left The Salvation Army to pastor a Nazarene Church.
The Salvation Army provides a fully furnished house. And when I mean "fully furnished" I mean right down to the tea towels. When we left we had nothing, zilch, nada.
Our first church, the people gave us various pieces of furniture. I still have one of the dressers given to us at that time. It's a solid 1940's dresser that will last forever I think.
But, as you can imagine, as time went on we bought things when we could afford them.
We quickly learned to shop at auction sales and garage sales.
I sometimes say that if I had been given $20,000 to furnish my house with new stuff, I wouldn't have had as much fun and wouldn't be as happy with what I have today.
Here's my latest purchase. I bought this bookcase on Friday night at an auction. It's perfect to display some of my collectibles and old books. It only cost $20.00.

At this point in time, $20,000 would go in the bank to cover schooling. For the first time have two in school where the bills are $16000 to $17000 each! Plus we also provide some support to our daughter's best friend. Finances are getting tighter than we first got married and I was in college!

Exactly. With two girls in University the money is flying out of our house. Believe me, if we had been given $20,000 it would not have been spent on furnishings.
I guess what I was trying to say was that even if we had had the resources at the time to buy all new stuff for our house, I don't think I would have been as happy with what I have created for far less.
Tuition for my two daughters is about $5,000 each and then living costs.
Blessings,
Barbara

Amen! Money is flying out of our house, too......funny how that happens. LOL Funny how it's much easier to have it fly out than to fly back!!!

I have always gone to used furniture stores for wood furniture, dishes, silver and etc. Also auctions. More fun.
Someone at our home awhile back remarked about our expensive furniture and how beautiful.
I just said thanks.
I sat down and looked at my home through her eyes.
Pretty good looking stuff.
I just found the iron tea pot I want it is on Ebay.
There are many there incase anyone would like to look.
I had never heard of one until another here told us about them.
Now I must learn how to bid.
I am rather shaky as I have never done this before.
Wish me well.:)

I know the feeling Marg. You have put into words the sense of blessing I have when I look around my home. I think some would believe we have more money then we do :-)
