View Full Version : A little confused about Reputations

I went to edit my settings back to how I had them before the Crash, and when I clicked settings, it immediately brought me to my reputation page, saying I have over 500 reputation points. But when I hover over my little green marks, it says 400-499. I wouldn't really care if I had a 0 reputation, y'all couldn't stop me from posting :), but I am wondering how the system works.

It was said this man was of no reputation
Yet He could stop the rising storm
With a gesture of His hand
But He chose to use His hands to heal
Hearts of darkness, hearts of stone
Just like mine would be revealed
He was a man of no reputation
And by the wise, considered a fool
When He spoke about faith and forgiveness
In a time when the strongest arms ruled
But this man of no reputation
Loved the weak with relentless affection
And He loved all those poor in spirit just as they were
He was a man of no reputation
It was said this man brought only confusion
That He'd achieve his ends by any means
And the truth that it brings revolution
And for once they were right
The truth set us free
The hearts of the captive were his only concern
And the powerful knew their days were ending
He was a man of no reputation
And by the wise, considered a fool
When He spoke about faith and forgiveness
In a time when the strongest arms ruled
But this man of no reputation
Loved the weak with relentless affection
And He loved all those poor in spirit just as they were
He was a man of no reputation
One day soon the gates of heaven will open wide
And the Prince of Peace will come back for His bride
But for now we live on these streets
Forbidding and tough
Where push always comes to shove
And it's said love's never enough
Where a prophet in rags gives hope to a fearful world
No injustice, no heart of darkness
Will keep this voice from being heard
He was a man of no reputation
And by the wise, considered a fool
When He spoke about faith and forgiveness
In a time when the strongest arms ruled
But this man of no reputation
Loves us all with relentless affection
And He loves all those poor in spirit, come as you are
To the man of no reputation

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it was someone else.

So you're still going to cemetery... er... seminary. :)

There's a section on how Reputation works in the FAQ. However, I confess that it's a confusing feature which is the reason I didn't activate it for a long time. The only reason it's on now is that the Thanks mod's search feature doesn't work. It does, though, interface with the reputation feature. By activating both, it makes it so that users can click on "settings" and see their thanks, laughing, and prayer responses.

It also appears that since the Crash, you can now see who gave you positive or negative reputation points. I don't want Mike W knowing it was me who took away all his points :)

For me it's not about having reputation points, it's my OCD tendencies really taking issue with the lack of mathematical consistency.

I think I figured it out. I've been watching my "reputation" for the few days as I've posted, and cross-referencing it with my settings. it looks like when I reached 1000 points, my reputation moved into the 750-999 segment, and when I reached 1500 points, my reputation moved into the 1000-1499 segment. So, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it stays one segment behind your total points. At least, that's what I'm going to tell myself so I'm no longer bothered by the math.

Anyone who didn't understand Mike's post needs to listen to more Rich Mullins.

As does anyone who did understand Mike's post.

True enough..... you can't ever go wrong by listening to more Rich Mullins.

I think the math is just more complicated than we can easily perceive. I checked twice in quick succession today. I received three "thanks," but my reputation went up 20 points.
Perhaps we just have to embrace the mystery.
I do like your explanation about the numbers being one section behind - that helps alleviate the OCD issues.

One of the things that I learned when using this system on another vBulletin board was that each person has a "Reputation Altering Power." For instance, someone with a really high reputation has a greater ability to change your reputation then someone with a really low reputation. In other words, you can't simply assume that a "Thanks" is a "Thanks" is a "Thanks." Sometimes a "Thanks" is really a "Super Thanks!"

You are welcome to spend time at vbulletin.com and learn all you can and then come back and share it. All I did was change the point system and rename it based on the number of points. Like: 0-99 is simply called that rather than some cute name.

How can you see this?
I think it's been corrected. It's not showing up in my settings any longer.
