View Full Version : Well...now I am curious

Carl and I bought our own home, so the church rents out the parsonage. Monday night, a group of us assembled at the parsonage to do some cleaning in preparation for new tenants.
I moved the stove out and found a pretty gross mess. It obviously hadn't been cleaned behind there for a long time. Carl asked me, "What's the problem? We only ever clean behind our stove when we move."
Well...I wonder what he thinks I've been doing those times when I am on my hands and knees behind the stove :-) Playing with electrical cords.
But I thought I would do a quick survey and most of the women in the cleaning party consider cleaning behind the stove (and the fridge of course) a twice a year job.
Which is about where I am at.
So since we have had laundry questions here...I am curious as to how often most of you think this job should be done.
One man who was in our group was quite convinced that they had never cleaned behind their stove. Knowing his wife I am relatively sure he was mistaken in this. Simply as oblivious as my dear hubby.

Miss Barb: As a renter I will ask twice a year, about 6 months apart for the maintenance man to come and move my refrig and my stove so I can clean behind it. When I move them they tend to tilt off center a little.
Example: I was boiling water and I looked over at the stove and slowly my tea kettle was moving to the middle of the stove. So I have them come and move and then re-level the appliance.
But I do clean behind cuz otherwise things could grow.

LOL! Yes. The last time I cleaned there I think I threw the stove off level a bit.

Hello There!
I can't clean behind my stove because it is a drop in unit and is built into our cabinets.
My refrigerator is built in tight, too, so I just take the vacuum wand and take the front off to vacuum under it.

I clean behind my refrigerator every couple of months, actually. It is on rollers and I can move it out myself without any problems. We have two dogs that shed very heavily, and I just feel more comfortable getting back there every couple of months to vacuum the back of the refrigerator. Now, the stove is another story. We have a drawer on the bottom and I can pull that completely out and clean under MOST of the stove. And fortunately, when I roll out the refrigerator, I can reach the vacuum wand behind the stove, too, so I guess you could say that I clean behind the stove that often, too, but it's not as thorough as pulling it completely out, which I do, well, at least once a year! It's not nearly as easy to do as the refrigerator.
The funny thing is that about 2 weeks ago, I pulled the refrigerator out to clean behind it like I always do, and I got sidetracked and didn't run the vacuum behind it. Well, it stayed in its OUT position for 3 days before I finally got around to vacuuming behind it!! It was just one of those weeks -- my house has been a disaster area for a month now with the redecorating projects, so I guess my family just figured it was another "thing" I was getting into!! HA HA

I clean behind and under the refigerator when the repairman is coming to fix the leak in the ice maker pipe.
I clean around the stove and refrigerator with a mop that will go between them.
My old appliances do not have rollers.
I always clean under them before I move so when they clean for the next pastor they think I was a spotless housekeeper.

I just realized I'm now supposed to clean behind my stove and fridge. Darnit.

Good question -- I'll try to remember to ask my cleaning lady tomorrow how often "we" clean behind the refrigerator. The stove is a built-in wall unit and the cooktop is one of those that's built into the counter.
My housekeeping mentor was Erma Bombeck, who opined that if you don't have any friends tall enough to see the top of the refrigerator, there wasn't a whole lot of sense in dusting up there. PTL for short friends!

Ha ha, make that two of us. I think I saw my dad doing it once in my life. We're currently renting apartments, which is not the biggest motivator in terms of cleaning. I often find myself thinking, "this isn't my house, who cares if it gets messy behind the stove!" Ha ha, that is terrible! :o

Me, too! And I am glad that you fessed up first :p
I don't have pets, just centipedes. So, I really don't WANT to clean behind there. I'll just let the bugman take care of that stuff.

Being only 5'1", I agree! If I can't see it, I won't clean it.

I don't clean back there, but sometimes my dad does. I have when I've moved. I should vacuum the fridge coils more often b/c it helps its efficiency.

Brinx (our dog) loves it when I clean behind the stove and fridge. I sweep it out and he finds little piles of treasures to consume.
Dogs can be disgusting.
