This was the weekend that 5-0 Missouri was supposed to go into Lubbock, Texas and get brought back to earth by the Red Raiders. In the last three or four years, the only road teams that have won in Lubbock were Oklahoma, Texas, and South Carolina (when Philip Rivers of the Chargers was their QB). Oh well, 5-1 is pretty good and the Tigers are still in the the thick of it for the Big 12 North.
But wait...what's this? Missouri 38, Texas Tech 21? How did that happen? Five turnovers. That'll pretty much do it every time. So now the Tigers head to College Station, where the Aggies will probably be favored to beat them, too.
And what's going on out in Manhattan, KS? First-year head coach Ron Prince benches senior starters at QB and RB and starts two true freshmen. That's a recipe for disaster. What's he thinking?
Apparently he's thinking those two kids can help bring his team back from a 27-17 4th quarter deficit. Josh Freeman, who Prince lured away from Nebraska by promising him a chance to play QB (Nebraska wanted him to play tight end), completes 10 of 17 passes for 177 yards with ZERO interceptions and runs for one touchdown. Leon Patton carries 21 times for 151 yards and one touchdown. With some help from special teams (blocked punt returned for a TD; Patton kick-off return for a TD), K-State pulls the come from behind upset, 31-27.
Except for the the continuing debacle that masquerades as the University of Kansas football program from August to December each year, it was a good weekend to be a Big 12 fan in Kansas City.
