In this thread (http://www.naznet.com/community/showthread.php/7452-phone-internet-for-around-100), I talked about trying to dramatically reduce what I'm paying for cable/phone/internet.

I've decided to completely eliminate cable and home phone, but that still leaves me with a fairly hefty monthly wireless bill for our two iphone 3Gs with a family plan.

I'd like to break my contract which expires in November, and use ATT's 50.00 per month "go phone" option, which gives you unlimited calls, texts, and data. Even with the hefty 350 early termination fee (total), I'd still come out 300 bucks ahead between now and November, and save 1200 a year thereafter over what I'm paying now. Combined with eliminating my cable bundle, that's 3000 a year in savings.

This article (http://osxdaily.com/2010/08/01/prepaid-iphone-setup-iphone-for-pay-as-you-go-plan/) tells how to do that and keep using our iphones.

I've never tried it... but if you do, and it works, I hope you'll let us all know! :)

What! Breaking a contract is immoral. Didn't you read the thread about this! You're a preacher! - Sorry couldn't resist - and before they all jump on me several in the thread who were more strict than I on the matter would not consider this immoral. It's a joke... :smilies1722:

I haven't read that thread yet, so I'm not walking in that light.

Perhaps you should avoid the thread then, since you're only responsible for walking in the light which you've been given.

I wouldn't really be breaking the contract. I would be exercising the early termination option, for which I would be paying a penalty.

Yes, definitely let us know how it goes.

Good answer and a correct one. One who terminates a phone contract isn't breaking the contract. They are exercising the provision related to early termination.

The primary issue is whether or not the ATT coverage is adequate for your needs. Last time I checked, their network didn't have good coverage at my home in Washington, so it wouldn't be an option for me.

So with this type of plan you are forgoing internet access to your laptop or PC (if any) and all cable TV ? and you are picking up Unlimited data, calls, n Texts . Do you watch much TV (guess not...and figure you can catch up on if if you must via Hulu or others?) Very interesting!

As a family, I'm concerned that we are spending entirely too much time with our TV, ipad, laptop, and smartphones, rather than with one another and other people. Since we are moving to a new home this summer, I feel it's a good time to take a break from cable and home internet and see if we can live without it. There are plenty of free wifi locations, and we can still do what we want to on our phones. We can also purchase a prepaid wireless usb device for the laptop.
