Do any of you know if it is possible to set MS Word 2003 so that pages are numbered by default? I often print documents without remembering to number the pages. The default is not to print page numbers. Is there a way to change the default to print page numbers?

Michael,
The only way that I am aware is to set up a "header" on each document. Once that is set up, it automatically numbers the rest of the document. I looked around Word just now and found nothing regarding page numbering that would allow it to be the default.
I hope someone else can help.

... set up a footer, rather than a header. ;)
'Believe it's under "Insert" that you find either "header" or "footer." Choose which one, then there are various ways of doing them ... "default," "first page," "odd page," "even page," since one might want different headers, if doing those.
Have fun! ;)

I'm not where I have printer access right now, so I can't confirm this. But, I think you can set it so that your printer automatically sets a page number on each page. That, too, would be in the header/footer set-up.
I know my printer at work is set to print "page 1 of xx", etc for printed faxes, internet sites, etc. So, it makes sense that you can set default printer settings to number each page.

I am sorry, but I wasn't clear in my question. By default, I mean that unless I mark it differently, anything I type and print would have the page numbers. I often forget to add the page numbers when I type and print a long document. I wish the page numbers would be automatically inserted instead of my having to go to "INSERT" and then "PAGE NUMBERS." Adding them in a footer or header would also require my remembering an additional step.

I combined your suggestions, including a private email, and changed my normal.dot. It is the default opened when one begins a new document. The normal.dot now includes the page numbers at the bottom. Thanks everyone.

Yeah that's what I was going to suggest. Templates are good things if you go to the trouble of setting them up.

I didn't know that option was possible. I suppose someone could set up several templates and open the one he or she needs when creating a new document. Right?

Microsoft has several default templates that it uses and you can create your own .dot files and store them in the same directory as the other templates or create your own directories. We use them extensively at work for forms.

I have been told you need to change your normal.dot template to do what you want.
