View Full Version : A Nikon D70 question

Before I send my Nikon D70 in for service, I thought I would give the rest of you a chance to tell me what I might have overlooked.

The problem is fairly straight-forward. The pop-up flash won't stay down. I thought that there might be a setting on the camera that accidentally got changed, but I can't find a setting that could cause this problem.

There is a little catch that sticks up out of the camera body. A visual inspection shows no problem with it. I gently moved it with my knife blade and it moves back and forth as I think it should. It simply doesn't hold the flash down.

Is there anything I should check before I return it to Nikon?

Can you reset the camera by pulling out all the batteries - primary and backup? If it is a software problem, sometimes removing all power from an electronic device does the trick.

It is certainly worth a try. I removed the main battery, but not the small one that retains memory.

Dave,

There are upgrades of the firmware of the D70. Don't know if you ever applied them? If the problem is software related, that might be something to try as well.

Dave,

Just checked my own camera. When I push the flash down, I hear a soft "click". Do you hear that as well?

I hear a click, but it doesn't sound exactly the same as it did.

I compared it to Grandma Carolyn's D70. There is no difference that can be detected by visual examination.

I have not installed the firmware upgrade and will have to wait until I get back to Gig Harbor. I did not bring my cable with me.

Dave,

I checked the internet on problems with the pop up flash of the D70. Found two guys who had had the same problem as you. Unfortunately, neither explained how it was solved :basic04 (At least, it does not appear to be a common weakness of the D70.)
I get the impression however that the camera was sent in to be repaired. The good news is, I presume it is still in its warrenty period?

I don't have my warranty information with me. I will have to wait until I get home to check. I know that I bought it around this time last year.

Dave

PS: I now remember that I was still using my Sony when I went to New Zealand last January. That means that I bought it less than one year ago -- still in the warranty period.
