My computer is a mess. Everytime I try to close out of a site a box pops up that reads,

INTERNET EXPLORER

Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close, we are sorry etc. etc.

Please tell Micro Soft about this problem etc.

Send error report Don't send

Anyway it doesn't seem to matter what I do, send, don't send, bang my fist against the key board, throw the screen out the window, etc. it just keeps doing it's thing. The problem then, is that it shuts down or locks up, any help from you computer techs to this rookie is much appreciated.

David, if I had that happening, the first thing I would do would be to re-install Internet Explorer. You can get the latest version at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx

Beyond that, I recommend you try Firefox instead of using Internet Explorer. You can get it at: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

I second Scott's recommendation.

scott and keith, thanks I tried the first recommendation, but it didn't help. I don't know about putting on the Firefox thing, as I think my kids need the internet explorer. I just spent a couple hundred a few months ago having my computer cleaned up and stuff, it sure is frustrating. david

Firefox is a web browser much like Internet Explorer. Almost all sites work with it, so it might be worth a try. It's safer from a virus/spyware perspective too.

From what you are describing, you might have a spyware issue that's causing errors with Internet Explorer. You might try downloading and installing Windows Defender - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx - and running a scan to see if there's something gunking up the program.

Keith, thanks so much for your kind suggestions. I ran the windows defender, it said my computer was running correctly, no problems, wish that were true. So, then I ran the McAfee virus scan, it ran through 28,237 files and said there were no viruses or infected files. I'm at a loss, as my computer is a mess. I got my ticket out from the shop I took it to 5 months ago to see if it was guaranteed, it was for 30 days. I spent $137. on it back then. One of the disadvantages to this new technology is that old guys like me are just not sharp enough to understand much of it, or how it works, what's that old saying, "I know just enough to be dangerous!" I'd do that other thing you and Scott mentioned, but don't really know how or why, that is the Fire fox thing. thanks once again for your input

David -- I will third the recommendation for Firefox. There is also a Firefox plugin that will render IE-specific windows a little better. Did you go on Tools -- Internet Options -- Delete Cookies/Delete Files?

Here is also something to try.

to all my helper, finally figured out what you were trying to get me to do, downloaded that firefox thing, it working well, just one more question, please?
I seem to have lost my favorite icon thing, how do I put a website, like naznet in my favorites, or on my desktop?

Glad you got it going.

On Firefox, "favorites" are called "bookmarks." Click on it to bookmark a page.

You can import your IE bookmarks as well.
File => Import
