that have something inside of them that track the movements of those who have the coins in their possession. Hmmmmm, hey Canada, can we use em for a while? Maybe we could track down Osama! LOL

Couldn't figure out what on earth you were talking about till I found the news article at:

I could make some smart comments but others have already done that and you can read them (often humourous) by clicking on the "Latest Comments" link on the left side of the above page.

It seems like a pretty useless way of tracking people since the coin could be lost as soon as the recipient decides s/he wants a coke from a vending machine.
If this story is true, I think the transistors are for some sort of tracking study...where coins travel etc. Why anyone would need that information is open to speculation.

I read the article about this today and remembered the discussion about this "Spy coin" a little while ago.

As I recall, both Mark Doble and I sent a few of those coins down to the States. It was all part of our devious plan to discover what you were really saying about us :-)

Actually, mine's stashed deeply enough that I don't think it could hear too well. ;) Thanks again, guys!

I always thought that the occasional Canadian coin in my possession was an insidious plot to prevent me from getting Zingers or M&Ms out of a vending machine. :basic03

The USA Department of Defense originally made this claim public, but quickly and publicly disavowed it when it was determined there was no substantiation:
