View Full Version : Thoughts on 24

1. I don't think I could watch it on a weekly basis. I think I'll stick to renting the DVD's when they come out and having a marathon. Too intense to wait a week.
2. I have come to the opinion that if you are an unknown agent assigned to go with Jack Bauer as back-up, you should make sure your affairs are in order. You aren't coming back. (Sort of like the unknown ensign on a Star Trek away mission.)
3. Nobody eats, drinks or goes to the bathroom for 24 hours.
4. They fudge the timeline a bit. They have to. The amount of places Jack had to go to in the season I watched...that couldn't happen in the time frame. As well, complicated surgery was over in an hour and the patient was talking to his wife just a few hours after being shot.

It is better to watch it in DVD form Barbara but I am not disciplined enough to wait for a season to pass and a DVD to be released.
The thing I like about 24 is its urgency. Every moment counts. It's a strenuous way to live but it is really living.

But you would admit that they do fudge the timeline a bit once in awhile?
Unless their cars drive at supersonic speeds. :-)

"This I will admit. But they do only show 45 minutes each episode so perhaps there are things happening during commercial break" (said he grasping at straws)

I just recently finished watching season 2 and I am now watching season 3.
I am amazed at how much Jack can be shot, stabbed, tortured, suffer heart damage, survive auto/airplane crashes...and he can still beat the bad guys.
It's also hard to believe that the Counter-Terrorist Unit doesn't have a policy against hiring family members and/or being romantically involved with co-workers and or bosses.
I suppose that the storyline goes by so fast that we don't have time to think too much about it.

I've only seen season 4. But the secretary of defence's daughter was no slouch in that season.
In one day she was kidnapped, threatened, inhaled gas until she passed out, was shot at and saw her husband tortured. Then her husband was shot, operated on and then died. And at the end of the day she just looked a little tired.

Season five....
Things get much worse
If that seems possible.

Nope, time passes during commercial breaks. They show you the time on screen at the beginning of the break and again when they come back from break. On DVD it's more noticable because nothing happens in between so you see that the commercial breaks are each 3-4 minutes long.
My theory is that Jack Bauer exists in the same time-space continuum as my wife, who never plans her schedule to account for the time it's going to take to get from one meeting to the next. Jack can get anywhere in a metroplitan area in about 10 minutes, but that's the least of his superpowers. ;-)

Apparently the show has some addictive behaviours?
So I think I will spare myself another addictive behaviour and not watch. :basic05

Since we are basically homebound with the ice storm, we took the plunge and rented the first season this weekend from a video place not far from home.
Yes, we now can claim addiction, as well.
I quickly noticed who was probably dispensable, and decided I'll be careful with whom I work in the future :) -- not that the FBI is beating down my door to hire me.
It's probably true of many high profile jobs, don't you think, that the non-important side-item personnel easily get eliminated?

... last night, not getting the TV either switched or off before it came on (not that anything else would've been good, either), I wondered what this program was that I'd never seen. After a few minutes, I learned I was watching for the first time ................... "24."
Man, it is intense, isn't it? Also, I couldn't believe that they decided to "sacrifice" this one guy ... a certain "Jack" that I see spoken of earlier in this thread. Strange ... he gets jabbed with a knife {where I had to look away; I do *NOT* generally watch this kind of program ... ever! but I'd heard of it here enough, so tried it ....}, then just a bit later we find he's escaped from those doing this.
'Looked dastardly enough (what they were doing) that you'd not think he'd be in any shape to even try to get away, much less succeed at it. Did I hear someone mention (Brad?) "superpowers"? Today's version of "Superman," perhaps? Don't think I'd be joining you folks, tho', as a regular, in spite of the terrorist/US topic ... tho' regular TV is getting bad enough that there's not really much left to watch anymore. HOWEVER, 'American Idol's' coming back ... that's at least musical; then there's 'Ugly Betty,' who tries to bring some saneness/kindness to a cold fashion business.

There are some parts of the story that I saw coming a mile away...then there are parts of the story that had me saying, "did they really just do that?"
I just finished watching season three tonight. It's quite a ride.
Enjoy season 1.

My life is over! I was sure that just before I moved to Australia on September 1, 2006, I read that I'd be able to download new episodes of 24 a day or two after they aired, for $2.00 per episode.
I apparently dreamed that. Neither iTunes nor the official 24 website at the Fox network seems to have such a thing.
BLAST! That means I can't watch it until probably after the entire season is over and it comes out here on DVD. And that means I can't read threads like this anymore until then.
BLAST!

Brad,
Could you not watch 24 on Internet T.V.?
Or, could I mail you the series on DVD?

Brad, Try this link and see if the series is up-to-date? I seems to work fine with me and I don't think you need a special player?

Yes, I peeked at the place Bob Woolley posted for "24" watchers. I see there "7th Heaven" is listed, but says only, "1 video," not "147" like "24" has.
You see, I liked that show, tho' I didn't find it until it was 5-6 years old. THEN they decided to end it. THEN they decided to make more, after all. NOW that they're making more of them, they've PULLED it from regular TV, and have it only on CABLE!! BUMMER!
Could someone who has cable, and watches it---or would mind watching it and doing whatever one does to put videos there---please put some more "7th Heaven" (current ones) up there? Yes, I do have only dial-up, but have found that if I leave the computer for a few hours during the night and go do something else (or sleep!), I might have enough of a slowly downloaded thing to watch at regular speed once it's DL'd to my computer. [UNLESS, of course, these are things one cannot DL, but have to have a fast hook-up to watch at normal TV speed while on-line] ..... ?????
WELL, came back to add that there wasn't even really one "7th Heaven" video on ... only a short promo for the first of the "new" season; Ruthie makes some comment as they're waiting in the airport to go somewhere, and someone comes over to them and says, "Come with me ...." Bummer! Oh, well ................

Wow! That seems to be it! It appears to be good quality streaming video of all the episodes that have aired so far! Cool! Thanks.

Bob, thanks again. Thanks TONS!!! I watched the two-hour episode that aired this past Sunday night in North America (but not in Australia. We're almost always a full season behind on U.S. TV shows.). It was free, good quality, full screen video. I'll watch the Monday episode in the next day or two and be caught up with this season. From there I'll just watch each succeeding episode some time during the week after it originally airs in the U.S.
You're a life saver!
Gratefully Yours,
Brad
