A child I once carried
although I was not married.
A nation I gave life
though I was not a wife.
My blood could fill a land
enforcing God's command.
And though I always lie
I'll never ever die.

Do things have to be alive to carry a child? We have been along these lines before.....This is mentioned in old and new testaments -- but the reference about the child is old testament.

I had difficulties because "blood", thinking to rivers, I always have thought, "can not be, it is said 'looked like blood' but not 'is blood'".
Truely a good riddle!

A child [Moses] I once carried
although I was not married.
A nation I gave life [Israel if reference to Noah, or Eqypt]
though I was not a wife.
My blood [blood of a river is water]could fill a land
enforcing God's command.
And though I always lie
I'll never ever die.

Thank you for your kind help!
blood of a river is water
Is it an often used picture (metamorphosic picture) in the english language?

Not really. You have to think of it as blood giving life to us -- and water gives life to a river. It is a metaphor (or a simile -- not sure how the rules work on that).

No problem Carsten -- riddles usually tax the full use of language so they can really be a good way to learn. My Russian professor used them on us a lot.

No question - yes. It needs to roll forwards and backwards again and again alot of possibilities, touching many words in different grammatical constellations. Indeed, a riddle is a good device, not only for the language, also for bible contents, bible stories.
