I was glad to see she wasn't hurt. I wonder how many times she did that right and then all of a sudden she just hit it the wrong way and the rest is history.

Maybe it was a relative new car and she was untrained to ride it - see it "hopping" before she turned in, it is not an automatic gear box, it seems she must restart the engine.
Such things also will happen under stress.
Maybe her bag was fallen (with a box of eggs inside?) while "hopping" or while turning in or such thing took her attention - in the wrong moment.
--- edited --- In Germany no car gets the needed patches on plates, without insurance contract.
The contract for Ruth's car says "material" limit 20 Millions Euro, "health and life" no limit.
That is a normal contract.
In case, the couple in movie had a "full or partial - Vollkasko or Teilkasko" Kasko - contract, they will get another car. Such Kasko - contract is recommended for new cars, "no risk or just a small risk - get back the full price in case of a crash".

I have seen exactly this a few years ago in front of a homeground "on a block corner", I worked on. I took some papers out of my car, parked in the street, and closed the door, turned back to walk inside - and a young man crashed with low speed like this Lady in movie against the small garden wall, and turned his car on head. He got a hit on head - and was like drunken - I had difficulties to get him out and thought to blood in brain because he gave no clear answers. But after some minutes an ambulance appeared and the physician checked him, he was OK. Sixteen years ago (I wonder how fasten the time will be gone), it was a Volkswagen model, sold in Europe under the name Passat.
