Someone told me the other day that they didn't care about the national debt because it really doesn't seem to matter much. They basically said that whether we owe 15 trillion or 20 trillion, it really doesn't seem to make much difference.

The bottom line is that the electorate doesn't REALLY UNDERSTAND the national debt. They don't understand where the credit is coming from, how it is repaid, what the interest costs, etc. Furthermore, they don't understand how those things effect/impact the average citizen.

What we need is a rather thorough and intense national education initiative explaining the ins and outs of the national debt. (It would have to be non-partisan, of course, and it would have to ignore the blame aspect. Once the education drifts into whose fault it is, the learning process will completely shut down.)

Perhaps when the electorate truly understands, the electorate will force a solution.

Both sides wish the national debt would go away. Neither side will accept the other side's plan to deal with it. That means the national debt is still not the #1 priority.

Here's my theory...

If either party thought the national debt was #1 priority, then they would "give in" to the other side's plan even though they don't particularly like that plan. We would hear language like, "I don't like this but we have to do something..."

So my question is this: Just how bad will it have to get before one side will actually "give in" to the other to get the national debt taken care of?

I'm not a fan of Dick Morris - but I see him as a savvy political pundit. He has a column out today in which he describes a Romney landslide.

The article focuses entirely on the Obama side of the election, and without saying it in so many words, he tells us why this is going to be such a personal and negative campaign against Romney.

Morris describes in hard facts the meaning of current polling data and then dismantles the President's approach to turning things around.

I know that politicians fear voters deciding it's in the bag - but I have to admit that I think Morris has a lot more right than he has wrong in this column.

Wow.

While we Americans are busy with important stuff like gay marriage and free contraceptives, it appears Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu just brought the main opposition party, Kadima, into a national-unity government instead of proceeding to elections that he expected to win that would have given him 4 more years. Now he has just 18 months but with a powerful 78% of representative clout.

Seems the last time this happened was in 1967. Remember the 6 day war?

The esteemed Charles Krauthammer breaks it down for us...

Echos of '67: Israel Unites

By creating the largest coalition in nearly three decades, Netanyahu is establishing the political premise for a preemptive strike, should it come to that. The new government commands an astonishing 94 Knesset seats out of 120, described by one Israeli columnist as a “hundred tons of solid concrete.”

Thoughts?

With 30 states defining marriage as between one man and one woman, this is going to shake up the race - and will likely tend to change the subject from the economy. Apparently, this is considered to be good politics by his political advisers.

I don't know who thinks to compile this information. I assume that the studies and state by state comparisons are made routinely. This indicates small, but interesting differences.

I thought that the more interesting observation was that this:

"In addition, IBD looked at the economic performance of 11 states that Real Clear Politics lists as tossups for the 2012 presidential election. Many of these purple battleground states have fared far worse than the country as a whole during the past three years."

As I noted, the differences are small --- but interesting.

The Obama Campaign has come out with a slideshow that it hoped would make an impact. Seems it may have made an impact it didn't intend.

Here is the Obama Campaign Slideshow "The life of Julia".

Here is a "Conservative Response" by the Heritage Foundation: "A Better Life for Julia."

And Paul Ryan (mentioned repeatedly in Obama's slideshow) had this response:

“It suggests that this woman can’t go anywhere in life without Barack Obama’s government-centered society. It’s kind of demeaning to her,” Ryan said. “She must have him and his big government to depend on to go anywhere in life. It doesn’t say much about his faith in Julia.”

“Every one of those slides, I could go after their manipulation of statistics, and disentangle and unpack each of those talking points,” said Ryan. “It’s just the narrative that they’re trying to tell, that for this woman to succeed, she has to have a really big government.”

“It really shows the philosophical premise they operate from, which is — I think Romney coined it well — it’s a ‘government-centered society.’ You have to have government at every stage of your life to be there for you, otherwise, you’re going to fail. It’s promoting a cradle-to-grave welfare society,” said Ryan.

Which slideshow/world view do you find attractive? And anybody want to guess how long this stays on Obama's website?

As many of you know, I have had a rough time stomaching the GOP in recent years, mostly because of the Iraq War and the seeming short-term memory...

As many of you know, I have had a rough time stomaching the GOP in recent years, mostly because of the Iraq War and the seeming short-term memory loss of many candidates and advisors in the GOP resulting in blatant hypocrisy masquerading as "family values" and "Christian Conservatism."

Furthermore, the racism of key elements of the Tea Party, along with the "win at all costs (even if it costs the truth)" approach of the GOP and its blind defense of propaganda arms like Fox News has just insulted my intelligence one too many times in recent years.

Many of my values regarding issues of life and even certain approaches to fiscal responsibilty would be labeled as more conservative than liberal; however, the long fall from grace by the GOP has been such a crash landing that it is just hard for me to follow these people who seem to just want to use me as an Evangelical Christian as a willing participant in high priced propaganda. That is my feeling.

These don't have to be your feelings, of course. But I wanted to share my perspective to at least let you see why I sometimes sound like I am simply defending the president. Those who know me know that I have also criticized the president on issues, as well, and I will continue to do so. But I think that Christians are better, tactically and tactfully speaking, than the current consensus of the GOP approach! I'm just tired of Christians parroting whatever Hannity, Limbaugh, etc., say as gospel when the actual facts DO NOT match! It is lying, and I will not participate in it, even if it costs my party of first choice elections! It is also hypocritical to condemn one party for doing something that your own party has done in a masterful way for decades! I know, because I was part of the GOP since turning voting age!

Anyway, thanks for listening and praying with me about my own attitude even about those with whom I disagree. At least now you see why I disagree, and you are free to point out ways that my thoughts should change, if you want.... Or not....

God bless,
Charles
