    Earworm of the day

Wikipedia: An earworm is a piece of music that sticks in one's mind so that one seems to hear it, even when it is not being played.

A recent survey showed that around 2/3 of Naznetters who responded have a song playing in their head more often than not.

This thread is a place to pass on your earworm of the day. Someone with a song stuck inside their head can come here to drop it off and find a new one. Of course, the new one may be even more annoying than the old one, but, ah, such is life.

There's no need to include a recording of the song -- just a title or a few words will do. However, I'll start off with a video Debi Peck gave us in the survey thread:

Only the power of the Holy Spirit can get truth past the obvious.

Going back and forth between two Jonathan Coulton Songs:
    Code Money

    Mandlebrot Set

On a related note, I'm very happy JoCo offers clean versions of most of his songs. Very considerate guy, that one.

    Re: Earworm of the day

    Those ARE catchy!

Whenever I try to replace an obnoxious earworm with the song Debi linked, I end up falling instead into "Axel F," the theme song from Beverly Hills Cop. Wikipedia says that instrumental music is responsible for only 7.7% of earworms. This is surely one worthy of being included in that 7.7%, although I do notice it tends to get replaced more quickly than songs with lyrics. It has the requisite repetition and ability to go on and on without end. I wouldn't mind if someone assigned this to me as a theme song for life. I think it would take a long time to get tired of it.

Lately, it's been "Master of the House" from Les Mis. Not really the sort of song I like to be going around singing.

    Re: Earworm of the day

I posted the two pictures, located below the video clip, on my facebook last night and yes...I woke up with an earworm..."Listen to the Angels Singing." Why this song? In the middle of our adult cantata, the adults turned their backs to the congregation, flipped on their flashlights, pointed them to the baptistry and the angel puppets popped up out of the baptistry and lip-synched this song. Marsha, our puppeteer was Tony and he did an awesome job...it was a riot. The children in the picture joined us on the platform for the last portion of the cantata. Lots of the children were out of town but we managed to fill the essential roles.

In order to qualify as an Earworm with a capital "e", it has to be something you'd feel embarrassed or silly singing out loud. Such as mine for today, "The Ballad of Davy Crockett". ("Born on a mountain top in Tennessee, greenest state in the land of the free...")

Hmm... wikipedia didn't say anything about that. Maybe I should choose a different title for the thread.

I heard the term "earworm" first on NazNet. I've never heard it spoken.

Don't know about that particular fact(?), Peggy, but you did it to me now! You see, I had one of those 78's (tho' small, the size of 45rpm) when a kid with this on, so I still just can't help it ... I know all the lyrics yet ... the're just "there."

I should have said, "In my opinion, in order to qualify..." Also in my opinion, there should be a classier term than "earworm" for...well, classier earworms. For example, "The Church's One Foundation." Don't you think?

    Re: Earworm of the day

This morning there was mail on a library listserv offering some extraneous Pitney-Bowes equipment. Now I'm stuck with the 1920s vaudeville song "Mister Gallagher and Mister Shean" which Pitney-Bowes adapted for an ad campaign in the 1980s. Of course, the only lyrics I remember are "Oh Mr. Pitney! Yes, Mr. Bowes?" and "Absolutely, Mr. Pitney? Positively, Mr. Bowes!" This could get old very quickly.

    Re: Earworm of the day

I typically get an earworm that stays in my head for days or weeks at a time. But the curse of it all is that it's typically not the whole song, but just a phrase or line or stanza that repeats over and over and over.

For the last few weeks I've had When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. But again, not the whole song but just the following lines:

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
    That were a present far too small;
    Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

I owe it all to a talented young lady named Chelsea Moon that I found quite by accident a while back on Amazon MP3. It's been her version of the stanza that's been rotating over and over in my mind.

My earworms seem to fall into four categories of causation: A song I actually hear, a song I see/hear mentioned, something I see/hear that cues the song (someone says "rise and shine" and I'm doing Arky, Arky the rest of the day), and the dreaded mystery category. Subliminal? Dream? Let me know if you figure it out. By the way, thanks for reminding me of Yellow Submarine; think I'll email it to my son. If you want to hear a grown man scream, quietly say to my son, "In the town where I was born...." You can even just mouth the words.

Despite my "Yellow Submarine" and Hans' Randy Neuman song over here? That's some serious tenacity. I'll have to try harder.

After hearing about the escaped elephants on I - 70 outside of Indianapolis near my uncle's, and the long discussions about it with my cousins on facebook, I have been itching to sing this tune to my uncle....now, of course, I can't it out of my head. My favorite section is at 1:33.

It must have been last Saturday I saw the words "unashamed" and "Romans" on the same line. Although the reference wasn't to Romans 1:16, I have spent most of the week since then with "I Am Not Ashamed" playing in my head.

    Re: Earworm of the day

I wonder if it's technically an earworm if it doesn't have a tune? My bird-of-the-day calendar features an albatross, and ever since this morning those four lines keep replaying in my brain:

    It is an ancient mariner
    And he stoppeth one of three;
By thy long grey beard and glittering eye,
    Now wherefore stopp'st thou me?

    AAAARRGGGHHHH!!!

    Re: Earworm of the day

This has been my earworm for this entire week.

I've been captivated by Marcus comments that the one universal characteristic is the changed life, and I've been mulling over this weeks message from Ashes to Fire. I'm captivated by the thought that while Jesus was tempted by Satan, His mind never wavered from His relationship with His Father.

This will be the song we sing leading into prayer tomorrow morning.

Words written by one of our denominations finest theologians, and I just love the minor strains in the tune "Finlandia."

As I was putting this in the Hymn thread, I tho't of this thread, because there have been times, esp around Christmas, that this was my "ear worm," going over & over & over, both in my head and coming out my mouth. Think maybe b/c I like it so well & I'd not heard it in so long that I had to sing it for myself, since they were not playing it on the radio.

This has been my earworm of the week, really.

Christian/Gospel? Nah, not at all. Hokey? Maybe to some. But this one has me thinking about my late brother, Ken. It gives me an excuse to cry. 18 months after he went Home and I still grieve. The pain is still tremendous.

Wherever I am, God is, and all is well.

    Re: Earworm of the day

Thanksgiving is so late this year it has been necessary to break out the Christmas music before it arrived. My daughter has been asked to put together an evening of carols for next week's community "Spirit of Christmas" event. We went thru a bunch of Christmas music Sunday afternoon and I ended up with one stuck in my head. It was still there last evening (Monday) and started right back in this morning (Tuesday). Arghh!

"The Christmas Waltz" "this song of mine, in three-quarter time". It didn't make the cut. My daughter hadn't heard it before.

I kept waking up throughout the night last night to the tune of, "She's real fine, my 409!" I could not shake that phrase and those are the only words I know of that 60's song though I can hum a little bit more of it!

Some days, everything's a song. Bob asked me when something last happened, and I replied, "On Christmas Day. In the morning." Consequently, I had "I Saw Three Ships" stuck in my brain. Then the guy on the news said something about "whether they can get back to where they were", and I was stuck with the Beatles song, "Get Back". THEN something startled the flock of goldfinches at the feeder and, when they left, Bob said, "Bye-bye, birdies." For the next two hours my brain serenaded me with "Bye Bye, Birdie", "We Love You, Conrad" and "Kids". Thanks to the weather report, it's now "'Til the Storm Passes By". And the night's still young.

This one started playing in my head at about 4:00 this morning, waking me. It's been repeating over and over:

I'm not sure I'd call it an "ear worm" because that description can imply annoyance. I'm most certainly NOT annoyed by this one!

Well, maybe when they stick around, but are not earworms, they could be referred to as ear(heart)-warmers? Changing that "o" in worm to an "a" makes a lot of difference, doesn't it? Interesting ... what just one letter can do.

I woke up this morning with "Better Than Wine" by Derek Webb playing in my head. Who knows where that came from?

By this afternoon I have cycled through a few other tunes and am well-pleased with the one that has settled in. I even managed to tease a resemblance to it out of my piano. "You Look Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton. This is my kind of music, the kind of song that makes me say, "MMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm. I love mmmmmmmmmmmusic!"

For Christmas, my daughter and son-in-law gave me a book of Hoagy Carmichael music. (He hailed from Bloomington, Indiana, just down the road from here.) We've had a lot of fun going through it. Do you have any of his songs in your music collection? You might be surprised.

I was listening to music on my iPod today and was a little surprised to recognize the style. It's always funny to find "new" music in a fixed collection. I think this one has settled in for a while. Pretty catchy tune.

We went to the Annual Bluegrass Festival this weekend hosted by the local college, Denison University. There was an artist there of whom I had never heard, Rhonda Vincent and The Rage (although it turns out I've apparently been living in a cave). She's sponsored by Martha White Flour and arrived in the "Martha White Tour Bus", just like a gospel quartet. And all day today I have been singing "For the finest biscuits ever wuz, get Martha White's self-rising flour" over and over. Take a listen.

She took that hair off at night and put it in a box!

My wife and I opened for the Perry's this past Sunday night. Libby Perry Stuffle is the closest I've ever heard to Vestal.

To know and to serve God, of course, is why we're here, a clear truth, that, like the nose on your face, is near at hand and easily discernible but can make you dizzy if you try to focus on it hard. But a little faith will see you through.

I had to Youtube her because I've never heard of her before, but you're right, Libby Perry Stuffle is reminiscent of Vestal. I actually think Vestal's voice was kind of annoying and unpleasant to listen to.... just my opinion. Libby Perry Stuffle's appears to be less grating.

Thanks to Steve, I had The Eastern Gate (but not all of it only, "If you hasten off to Glory, meet my by the Eastern Gate, I'll be coming in the morning, so you'll not have long to wait.") stuck in my head for about five days. It's finally dissipated, but I am afraid that this post might resurrect it.

Will have to find it somewhere else for listening (did read the lyrics).

That place, after you uncheck that you'll not make it your "home page," won't let you proceed unless you tell it to. Then why on earth do they even have them "uncheckable," as if it's one of those "you-have-a-choice" places?

Oh, well ... we'll find it. Want to hear the music that's been put to those good lyrics.

    Re: Earworm of the day

This one's driving me insane! I did it to myself, though.

On my employer's Facebook page, I put up a "This Day In History" status nearly every day. Well, today's "This Day In History" was about the song "Macarena" reaching the top of the charts and starting its record 60-week run. The stupid song's been playing in my head all day. Thought I'd share it with you all so that I'm not alone ...

Unhappy Re: Earworm of the day

So it's a Sunday morning in April. Sunday morning. I should be humming a nice spiritual song, right? April. Something springy would be nice, right?

But no, I'm stuck with a Christmas song on an endless loop this morning. And not even a Sunday morning sort of Christmas song.

Sigh. I might as well share it with you all so you can join the fun, right? It will cleanse your musical palette from the recent additions Roy and Diane have made. (This isn't the version playing in my head. Apparently, no one has uploaded the vinyl record of children's songs from my childhood to YouTube.)

I think I figured out what prompted my "Nuttin' for Christmas" loop on a Sunday morning. It was as I was desperately trying to finish up everything that needed to be done before leaving for church and wondering why I put so much off until this morning.

    The pertinent line is:

"Next year I'll be good, just wait! I'd start now but it's TOO LATE!"

Hoping I can do better next week at being ready for Sunday morning. Maybe if I start now ...
