There was a review on this before the crash, which gave away the twist ending, so my review is going to be a bit biased.
This is a post-apocalyptic Odyssey of sorts in which Eli, a man played by Denzel Washington is on a religious quest to carry the last remaining copy of the Bible to some place where it belongs. He travels through a world populated by cannibal thieves and wandering bandits in search of his elusive goal.
The main conflict comes as he encounters a town, trying to rebuild, under the iron rule of a man named Carnegie, played by Gary Oldman. Carnegie is in desperate search for a copy of the Bible as he believes its words hold the key to his continued domination of the people.
It's an interesting story with some timely allusions to the ways in which people view the bible. The story is engaging and I love pretty much everything Gary Oldman does, so I was hooked. For me the experience was different, going through the movie, I knew the ending, which made it a bit more predictable, but it was fun watching and wondering whether I would have guessed the ending before it was revealed.
The acting was decent, the cinematography was really imaginative. The way scenes were shot and lighted was really effective. It also works as a decent allegory or at least something to spur a deeper than usual conversation.
I liked it.
