    Thievery

We have a small swimming pool for our kids. It is very small but large enough to require a filter pump. This morning I noticed our pump was gone. Someone walked onto my dproperty disconected the pump and left with it. We just bought it for $100 about a month ago. I am working really hard to not let this ruin my day.

That's sad, Kevin. I think it would ruin my day. Time to count blessings, I suppose, but sometimes it is easier than others.

Well, it was only $100 but man, who steals from children. That's exactly what they did, they made it so my kids can't be in the water when it's in the 90s and 100s f.

Crystal Meth addicts. In rural areas, they will steal anything not bolted down. If you have an outside AC unit, you might want to cage it because it's common to steal the copper out of them.

Well, we had a bunch of other stuff lying around the back yard too and none of it was taken. So my assumption is that it was someone who needed a pump. These little Intex pools are everywhere and the pumps that come with them are junk. The pumps are hard to find so I'm guessing some guy's pump broke and he just decided to take mine. I hope his kids enjoy it, but that everytime he sees them smiling he'll have a deep visceral conviction that he did wrong.

    Re: Thievery

Having had many, many things stolen from me in my life, while I still don't like it I pretty much rest on, "I guess they needed it more than I." But, stealing from children...that seems different. Kevin I'm with you, I hope this person's kids enjoy their pool but that when the thief sees them enjoying it she suffers deep conviction to the point of not being able to enjoy the kids enjoyment (at least for a little while.)

    Re: Thievery

This whole fiasco has really made me want a permanently installed pool........ that would be nice since it's so hot here, and you'd have to be really really strong to steal the filter pump.

Kevin, anytime anyone steals, it boils down to stealing from children. If they steal from the adults of children, it impacts the lives of children, to.

    Re: Thievery

Arrrggghhh..... we got hit last night again. We accidentally left our garage door open. Which apparently is the same a giant sign that says, "hey please come take my stuff." They went through a few cars in the area, but we were certainly the worst hit. I'm actually amazed at how much good stuff is still in our garage!

When I hadn't noticed that they'd taken anything only invaded our space it was really easy to ask the Lord to bless the the thief (thieves). Now upon further review I've found my bike missing (a several hundred dollar mountain bike with aftermarket chain and pedals and bike computer, etc). They also got into the van in our garage and took out my kids Nintendo DS and the case for it with like 5 games and the charger and our portable DVD player. Who knows what else they've taken that I just haven't noticed.

It's getting harder to pray God's blessings on the thieves but I am working on it.

I was sad when I heard my bike was gone (my wife noticed it was missing). I have a lot of good memories of riding that bike. I learned how to ride clipless pedals on that bike (and fell straight over the first time). Took my kids on great rides in their trailer on that bike. I conquered some mountains and some depression on that bike. I rode some cool trails and broke at least one small bone on that bike. It was a good bike, the cheapest "real" bike I could find and the most expensive bike I could afford. I miss that bike already.

Losing the bike made me sad, but I'm just plain steaming mad that they stole my kids' games... that's just low, to take from children.

You could revive that old standby -- "May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose" in honor of your friendly neighborhood thieves. I've been hit 2or 3 times in life and it's a bummer. And I confess: I did not pray God's blessings on the culprits.

    Re: Thievery

    Sorry you've experienced this again.

Sometimes it defies logic. One of our clients was hit the other day. The thieves stole a rusty bbq pit, a half filled propane tank for the grill, and a one third flled orange bucket of dog food. I understand selling the bbq pit for scrap metal, maybe. However, the propane tank and the dogfood don't make sense. The family had three days before been burned out of their home.

Question do you have a gate around the pool, second you know this sounds really bad but you could set up a trap. I know I would and have tried it before. Just couldn't stay up late enough to catch who kept taking out my parents mail box.

The pool was last year. Ironically enough, we just set up the pool for this year yesterday and set up the filter pump today.

Did you file a police report? I hope so. They need to know that it's happening, even if you don't hold out any hope of getting your stuff back.

But you never know... the bike could turn up...

I did file a report. In fact, we found a small pocket knife just outside my car that isn't ours and a deputy came along and put it in an evidence bag and said they were going to send it to the crime lab for fingerprints. My bike was not a $99 Huffy from Wal-Mart, it's fairly unique (I can't imagine there are more than one or two like in the area) so if it shows up in a pawn shop or Craigslist or something it will be easily identifiable.

You should warn people on naznet not to sell it on ebay or something. That would be embarrasing.

My guess they made it where their kids can play in the water when it is in the 90's or 100's.
"Do unto others" is the norm for the world is it not?

In my neighborhood we have had people twice come into my open garage and steal me blind. Once on a Saturday when I was home!
It is called drive by stealing, or snatch and grab. They drive by slow down the alley, looking for what they could take, then see if the coast is clear, run up and grab it and get back in the SUV before anyone notices they were even stopped. Happens all the time here. It is the most common form of theft according to the police here.

Oh and when you file a police report, it is public notice. Your insurance company will get it(they pay for people to do public records searches everyday) and your home owners will go up next year! Happened to me. It will stay on your home for the next 3 years. I got nailed 10 years ago when I bought my house because the previous owner got robbed and filed a claim with his insurance company(different than mine) and my insurance company rated me for it until it dropped off the 3 year records.
Also when you file a report all your neighbors will know it too! Security companies scan the public records and call you soliciting your business after you file a theft report. They also contact all your neighbors and cite your address as the reason they need security as well.
I was so mad I could bite nails, when my neighbors all spoke to me for the next few weeks asking me what got stolen and how. Embarassing....there is no privacy.

Well, I felt like filing the police report was the right thing to do, even if nothing comes of it. As for the neighbors, I only have 6 houses for neighbors and they all know about it already, we sort of live in community here and one of my neighbors was also robbed.

The police appreciated it, I'm sure. How can they catch criminals & follow patterns of criminal behavior if people don't report crimes?

    Re: Thievery

Last weekend while ten grandchildren and nieces and nephews were at our home, someone called 911. It resulted in a squardcar coming to the house, and a very contrite kid getting to sit behind the wheel of officer's car, turning on the lights and siren, etc. When our weekly paper came out, it reported a "911 hangup" with our address, and the time and date of the non-incident. Once in a million years they get the facts straight.
